On December 4, 2013, the Monterey Park City Council will vote on a proposed
ordinance that would require all businesses in Monterey Park to include the
"modern Latin alphabet" (alphabet characters like a, b, c, and x, y, z) on
their signs.
The proposed ordinance is problematic and should not be adopted because it:
Targets certain ethnic immigrant business owners who have signs in languages
not containing the modern Latin alphabet, such as Chinese, Korean, or
Japanese;
Violates free speech and equal protection under the First and Fourteenth
amendments of the United States Constitution and the California Constitution;
Is unnecessary considering that 100% of businesses in Monterey Park already
have "modern Latin alphabet" on their signs; and
Does not improve public safety. Monterey Park businesses are already
required by law to have numerical addresses, and technology like GPS is
readily available to find business locations.

Council Meeting, please RSVP with Nat Lowe at n***[email protected]
