Well…then you haven't met Jacquelynne Fontaine, Miss California
2006, and now a well-established soprano in the international
operatic circle and a doctorate candidate at USC.
I guess you might ask: She certainly looks good, but does she
sound good on stage? All right, you be the judge:

Last night, the Redland Bowl Summer Music Festival had its annual
"opera under the stars" program, featuring many of the best-loved
arias and duets from the operatic repertoire and four very good
singers of various levels of profession renown. From the very beginning,
however, it is quite clear who was going to be the star of the night.
When Ms. Fontaine made her appearance in a glittering dress for a
rendition of, well, Leonard Bernstein's "Glitter and Be Gay" and jokingly
struck a glamour-style pose in the process, the reception from the
"senior"-heavy and normally rather reserved audience definitely recalls
more a beauty pageant than an opera house. It is further proof that
you can make a living by being good at anything, but if you manage to
look really, really good doing it, success comes much more easily.
By the way, that proverbial "fat lady" above is the famed Spanish
soprano Montserrat Caballé, who is blessed with one of the most
gorgeous voices ever to grace the operatic stage, and I certainly
meant no disrespect to the grand dame. Over the years I have
heard at least 15 different singers tackle the wildly popular "O Mio
Babbino Caro," and nobody does it better, and with more elegance,
flair, and ease, than Montserrat Caballé.
