a cloudless, sunny day, the kind that southern California is
known for, but it was still rather cold, and my car was coated
in a layer of tiny drew drops. I was wearing a heavy leather
jacket and long cowboy boots, which I thought were very
appropriate for this winter day. My son, on the other hand,
came out of the house in a loose-fitting long-sleeved polo
shirt—nothing over it, and nothing underneath.
"Put on a jacket or something," I urged him.
He only shrugged: "It's not that cold."
As we approached his high school while still engaged in that
debate, we decided to check out what other people were
wearing. Quite to my astonishment, about one in every three
of his schoolmates was going about their business in short-
sleeved T-shirts, and quite a few, mostly girls, were walking
around in tiny shorts with flip flops on their bare feet, as if it
had been the dog days of summer.
I double-checked the calendar, and it was indeed February.
The thermometer in my car read 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Am I crazy, or are they? |
