I am interested in mechanical engineering, such as combustions, automotive
engines, thermal processes, transmission things. Can some one help me with
selecting several courses to get me started? BTW, what is the most interesting

of engines, etc. Basically I want to be able to design small components and be
able to make them and test them. :) For example, I think the DC motors in the
hard-drive is so cool because it could rotate to very accurate angles to read
out the stored message. And the GE's aircraft engines look so complicated and
charming, http://www.geae.com/ and the automotive engines are also so
attractive. I really like to know how t

| w********o 发帖数: 8 | 4 Are you looking for some courses or for a research topic? Taking a couple of
courses doesn't mean anything. Instead, aftering choosing a topic, you may
select relevant courses.
ME is still interesting. But in terms of career, simple mechanical design
(even as complex as making an engine) won't help you find a job.

If you are a millionaire, you can take it for fun.

| M*********m 发帖数: 2024 | 6 I guess I am looking for some useful courses first, if possible, I will get a
MS degree in ME. :)
From all the posts above, it seems it is a hard for ME to get a job initially,
but I think it is a very useful subject and if it is supported with some other
knowledge, it is very promising field.
As a green horn here, I don't think I know much about ME. :) But, from the
plasticsnap-on connectors of the optical fiber to complicated designs of
compressors, automotive engines, ME covers lots of the ap

| s*******n 发帖数: 121 | 7 actually you are right, me deals with lots of things, and you need to know sth
in physics, mathematics, material, energy, chemistry,... some will say they
combine these areas with me, some will say ME guys leave for these areas. it
dependends on you.
the good side is that the broad area guarantee you that there are always sth
interesting to you. the bad side is that you have to give up some interesting
things and focus on one. as to machine design, take one course only give you
some general rule

| M*********m 发帖数: 2024 | 8 Today I went to listen to a course on application of combutions. It's an
interesting course although I don't understand much of it. But the chain
branching of Hydrogen with Oxygen is very new to me. I went to sit also in
mechanical design course, but the course is mainly on how to interact and
cooperate in order to make new designs practical.
I have the feeling that the graduate courses in ME is also quite theory
oriented, while I am more interested in learning something practical. I am

| M*********m 发帖数: 2024 | 10 Actually I know the basics of using 车钳刨铣磨. :) My knowledge about ME so
far is that I could use lathe, mill, etc, and I know the specs about screws,
bolts, nuts, washers, shaft, bearings, pressure sensors, seals, heat treating
metal alloys, hardness of materials. I could use Autocad to do some simple 2D
designs.
And I just don't know where I should go from my primitive knowledge by hand.
Should I learn some simulation tools? How about plastic molding? I really want
to learn ME systemmatically for
