so only very valuable stuff, school will pay for it.

很多好的paper都还申请了专利，真是有问题，最近听说以前学校要取消对于科研论文和
专利的奖励了，赞一个，鼓励这些东西都是在烧钱做垃圾，据说某校还新成立什么基金
继续鼓励垃圾文章，nnd，国内要不是他们最先搞这种鬼名堂，造假浮夸的学术风也不会

but a university may earn quite a lot from a good patent. There are many
examples.
In order to have a good patent, you have to have lots of patent :)

THE PCR patent must be more than the following two
# the Cohen-Boyer patents on the basic techniques of genetic engineerin
g, which brought in around $195 million for Stanford University and the
University of California prior to its expiration in 1997;
# the Axel Patents on co-amplification of plasmids in eukaryotic cells,
which brought in $395 million to Columbia University prior to its expira

here once there were several important inventions which brought a lot of money
to this institute...they of course encourage people to patent everything new.
compared to the profit, that 30K or whatever is really nothing.
another factor is if your boss want to start up some business,
he needs to hold some patents.
