not necessarily true especially when you switch to a new field.
I think 3-year postdoc experience in a new field would be good.
in the same time frame, you can get some publications done,
be familiar with the whole thing, get networking, get your GC,
practice your English, etc. just like get another PhD in a different field.
the worst thing is to do 1-2 year postdoc in the same field as PhD,
even in the same lab....just like finish his PhD in longer time.

But add an even worse thing than your worst thing is to do a postdoc with
someone who jus wants you to teach himself and his students of your techniques
and also your skills. After they learned everything and set up thelab, you
are done.

him to manage his lab or help phd students. No 1st publication, no much money,
so sucks

you can skip those damn courses and qualify exams, etc, with much more money.
furthermore, you are more powerful than PhD students.
I really enjoy my postdoc here, hehe...
I personally think as a scientist, a postdoc position is really the closest
one to it.
No need to worry about fundings, courses, exams, teaching students,
compaigning and networking. Just research and first-authored papers.
Once you become a professor, hard to get first-authored papers bah....

To set up a lab, boss usually hires postdocs. Moreover, actually he is happy
to
keep the postdoc forever if that postdoc doesn't want to leave. But if this
boss is poor, he may hire students to save money after lab is set up.
Anyway, the most important thing is to follow rich bosses.
