Grothendieck在1950s刚出道时由于没有法国国籍在法国找
不到工作，不得不在美国和巴西的大学访问，在Rutgers大学
Grothendieck碰到一个女研究生Justine，她放弃了学校里
的课题和Grothendieck一起在巴黎生活了两年，有了一个儿
子，现在已经获得统计博士学位，1958年非官方的IHES成立，
Grothendieck才有了一个稳定的职位
1968年，苏联入侵捷克首都布拉格，法国爆发了大规模的反
战游行，政府在巴黎动用了坦克，Grothendieck从此越来越
多地关注政治，1970年他在Nice与警察发生冲突被扣留，但
是当发现他是教授时被释放，不久Grothendieck发现IHES受
到军方资助而毅然辞职，他的好朋友serre帮他在college de
France谋得一个教职，但是Grothendieck此时更多地谈论政
治而不愿意再做数学，1973-1984，他接受了montpellier大
学的职位，后来再没有地方接纳Grothendieck，甚至连申请
CNRS也被拒绝，从此Grothendieck彻底离开学术界，隐居在
montpe
