Abstract: A few weeks ago, a virtually unknown mathematician named Yitang
Zhang, who obtained his PhD in 1992 and has just one paper since then,
proved
one of the great results in the history of prime number theory: there are
infinitely many pairs of primes differing by at most 70,000,000. The
previous
bound was infinity.
I will give an overview of the proof suitable for a general mathematical
audience.
