Let C is known and C is positive definite.
How to approximate C as
C = x x' + D where x is a vector and D is a diagonal matrix
i.e.
min || C - x x' - D ||^2
s. t. D is a diagonal matrix
Is there an explicit solution ?
Is the problem convex?
