OK, let me give my idea on this issue and its order based on the importance
in my mind:
for me, as a pathologist,
1. Working environment you feel comfortable or happy, will be appreciated by
your Chair/PD and peers......
2. academic program, to do clinic, teaching, and research combined or at
least you can chose.....
3. geographic and salary is totally compromise to above.......
con for your achievement and eventually training done as a CMG surgeon from
a famous US surgery program fellowship!

谢谢老刀指点。这第一点确实很重要,因为总的来讲,工作的时间要比在家的时间多。

about location, I don't know how important it is to be in a metro area. like
access to concert, to China town, good resturant etc. basically, I did not
have whole lot of time to enjoy life outside of hospital all those years,
just wondering after having some of own controlled time, will location be an
issue.

Congratulations! What's your fellowship?
I'd say that in the first few years skill set development is more important. Once you experience more cases, become an expert and gain a good reputation, it's easier to switch job/relocate later.
If want to settle down, good working environment, autonomy, lifestyle,
location, and income should be considered.

thanks. you should be able to guess my specialty. I been so many places,
there are three kinds of jobs, first, the very top ones, you need to write
tons of papers and do clinical trials, you also gets to do very rare cases
which no other places will do. second is the majority, you do bread and
butter cases. third also not common, you do limited ones and refer the
complex ones to big center. the first kind of life is very very stressful,
there are incredible amount of pressure, but you can have

Last time I went interveiw with one PD in an academic program, he told me
the reason why they need someone is they just had one guy quiet. and
actually this guy is a CMG also. after finishing his fellowship, he worked
in a academic center for several years, and did pretty well and is well
published. Now he quits because had a big family and has a lot of financial
pressures. HE is in private now. 【 在 USMedEdu (US_CMGs) 的大作中提到: 】

Yes, it's a very personal decision. Some people like intellectual
stimulation, others just treat this as a business.
Location is kind of important. If you earn a lot of money but no place to spend, your family could get bored at some small towns or in the middle of nowhere.

thanks for your guys input, I appreciate it. Eric, I agree with you, it is a
very personal decision, depends on what you like in life. I was wondering
if there are something as practicing CMG physicians in common, guess it
really up to oneself.
but there are some technique issues on how to look for job, how to shape
your careers etc. I will give my 2 cents once I start practicing.

you always have options, and if you end up don't like the place you go to,
just change the place, it's some times hard to find a right job at right
time, and you might change your perspective later on.
so i think looking for the right job is important, but THE MOST important
thing is, to get a good contract, go through with your lawyer, make sure you
don't get screwed when you are there and after you leave there. that's
where most foreign doctors got hit pretty hard.
good luck! time really flies

ha ha, you must be in IT profession, remind me of one of my classmate in
college, when he thought he was ready to date, he made a table, list all the
girls in our class and rated them according to their look, height, study
score, family condition etc, and give one score per area and then add up
together, pick the girl with the highest overall score and then tried to
date her.
I think the most important thing is to know yourself, what is really
important for life, remember, one man's meat can be

thanks, there is an old lyric says looking from the beginning it is eternity
, but looking from the end it is short. I still have 8 month to go, but
seeing the light of the end of tunnel now. when I went for interview, people
really treat you like their equal, that is a weird feeling, but it is good
feeling. you will be there soon, before you know it.

you
well

Any detail about the part why and how the foreign doctors got hit hard (and
hence how to avoid this by going through the contract stuff with the lawyer)
? Sounds like useful information for a lot of doctor-to-be...
Thanks!

you
well
