No direct experience on Neuro, but seems some people received invites in
September and October.
Even a small number of surgery programs are on a rolling basis. I received
my first surgery invite on September 2, just one hour after I submitted my
application to that east coast program.

Will it be a stupid idea to do so? If so, I will only choose categorical,
however, I do not know which hospital I should choose preliminary then. It
seems like to give up that hospital totally for categorical IM, which is my
first priority. Please advise. Thanks a lot! |

may think you will also apply for an advanced program (another specialty)
and you just use categorical IM as your backup. It's OK if you can convince
the program that you like IM so much and you're willing to take the
preliminary position if you can't get a categorical one.

If you want to apply categorical but are willing to take prelim. IM in case
not ranked for the categorical track, then you may apply to prelim. track at
the same time. However, I'm not sure if doing this would decrease your
chance for receiving categorical invites since the PD might get confused
with your intention. |

For example if I can get an advanced program without a preliminary, does
that mean it is a dead-end?
If I can get a preliminary, just if, and no advanced program, will I be able
to apply for residency again next year when I finished that preliminary
year?
I am thinking whether it's worthwhile for me even to consider trying
preliminary, as my priority is IM categorical. |

- You will try to find a PGY-1 spot, through scramble, connection, or the
program's help. If you can't secure a PGY-1 spot, you can't hold the
advanced position.

office, and one is on the way. Should I assign only 3 LOR right now for the
purpose of complete package? Or I still should assign the 4th LOR anyway to
the selected program, because the program considers 3 LOR already met

funding issue for some programs if you will apply for a categorical program.
Programs can come up with the funding would like to take the candidates
with the PGY-1 experience.

Right now I only have 2 letters available in the post-office, so my pack is
incomplete to programs.
Regarding the Advanced programs, are they only open for preliminary PGY-1
resident candidates? Should we still apply for even without the PGY-1
experience?
