From ECFMG: It is suggested that applicants only use LoRs containing writers
' contact information because programs may contact letter writers to ask
about the candidate.
How often does this happen? Just curious.

No statistical data available for this. If a program is serious about the
candidate, they could call the letter writers to find out more information.
During interviews I found that many PDs/Committee members know my advisor/
letter writers and it's very natural for them to have some kind of
communications.
