than what I expected. I am in the research institute for so long, and I
really enjoy the environment in the university. But the pay is only half
of what I was offered in private practice. I am not young, and seem to
have no time to try different ways. I am so hesitated now. Please give me
some suggestion. Many thanks. | g******e 发帖数: 389 | 2 what job offer? what's in private practice? are you on usmle journey or done
? need a bit more info here | e*****a 发帖数: 1334 | 3 Sounds like he will finish his residency soon.
In general the pay in private practice is higher because people there tend
to work on as many cases as they can. They may have to deal with many bread
and butter cases (translate: work hard and could be somehow boring). The
possibility of partnership or “be your own boss” is an attractive option.
In academic settings, people may have the options for teaching, research,
limited clinical work, and may involve in more challenging cases (translate:
more interesting work, intellectual stimulation, more flexible working hours
etc.) The pay in general is lower; however there are exceptions (my school
pays some top surgeons good money, say about 1 million a year). | t*******n 发帖数: 224 | 4 Thanks. Is it easy to switch between privated practice and academia after
several years' working?

Yes it's possible. In an academic setting, there are many kind of jobs, mix
with teaching, research, clinical and administrative work, or clinical only.
Some primary care doctors at our university program only need to see 12-14
patients daily, and they also guide some medical students.
Private practice -> academic research position: somehow difficult, unless
you keep doing research or involve in some frontier medical work;
Academic -> private practice: be preparing for fast pace and high volume. Of
course you may choose a pay-cut and be more relaxed.

I know one of top neurosurgeons in University hospital here makes over 10
mil a year.

240 | 8 It is alright to be hesitant. Take your time and hesitate. The university
ambiance is a big draw to a great number of intellectuals. But sometimes it
can be rejuvenating to have a change in life. Follow your heart.
