Last week, I wrote a reply to the thread initiated by meigui0714 (rose) with
the title "(BSSD)他们更看重什么?" (see below), in which I recommended our
members read an excellent article titled "Paper Tigers". At that time, our
medical career board boss herby asked me to initiate a thread to discuss an
important topic of how we can improve our English language and communication
skills. Sure, now is the time.
The reason I point out to this particular article is because I believe it,
for the first time in at least 10 years, to my knowledge, provides us with a
BIG picture of how asian like Chinese are viewed by other groups in the US.
Those kids are US citizens. They shouldn't have any problem with English
language. But sadly the culture difference, in my opinion, sets them aside
from the main stream. As I mentioned before, it IS the culture NOT the
English itself that prevents us from communicating with the main stream
americans effectively. Therefore, my belief is that one can improve his/her
real communication skills only if he/she is willing to raise awareness in
american culture. This will hold true as long as we are minority in this
country.
What is your thought?

Back in June, I noticed an excellent article titled "Paper Tigers" authored
by Wesley Yang. It was published on the "New York Magazine" website. In this
article, Mr. Yang talks about some serious problems that many Asian-
Americans are facing right now. Although it is quite lengthy, I really enjoy
reading it from the beginning to end. If you have time, I highly recommend
you read it, especially for those who are parents already. What would you
like your children to be when they grow up here in the US? Refresh yourself
with it and rethink about yourself at least for now.
To get this article, search Google using key words: "New York Magazine" and
"Paper Tigers".
Happy sharing!

It appears that there is some misunderstanding about the purpose of this
thread among our forum members.
First of all, this thread does not intend to compare the culture between
China and the US, or to say which one is better than the other. In fact,
they are NOT very much comparable.
We are here to try to find better ways, rather smooth and painless, to
improve our daily communication skills through the contribution from our
members. We don't need big words. All we need is your time-proven SOLUTION.
Yes, that's it!
The conventional wisdom is that everyone will not be ready to help until he/
she is helped at the first place. So we are waiting, waiting and waiting...
Finally, all we get is nothing.
Think about it and let's share something here!

I don't think there is any misunderstanding about your post. you put a lot
of words on the skill communications, mainly about how to make American
think our Chinese is not Chinese but Chinese American because we accept
their culture and at same time we abandon our own's.
At least on conversation and communication skill, your post doesn't make me
feel comfortable. I don't understand why to behave as yourself is so hard
for you, it is so embarrassing for you. resident is a training for medicine,
not a training for American culture, moreover, among your patients, there
are different races different cultures, how can you handle this? you refuse
to see them because you convert 100% to American culture?
Asian culture is not my shortcoming, on the contrary, it is my advantage, I
will give Asian patients more close and more proper service, because I
understand their culture their living environment, their history, all these
will help me to make more accurate diagnosis and select more suitable
treatments.

There is no need to argue. It is an endless topic. What we need now is
solutions.
I, at least, have provided one of my solutions here

It's ok that you disagree with my method.
So WHAT IS YOURS?

Well, in general I agree that there is a cultural gap between CMGs (majority
anyway) and the american counter parts. But to improve communication, there
are many many ways, not necessarily all require you to immerse yourself
into american culture. A matter of fact, that could be more difficult for
most people than doing the residency itself, hehe. One simply just have to
open his mouth and talk. meanwhile pay attention to how people talk. topic
can be just about anything, Amongst many things i did during research years,
i worked part-time in a high end chinese restaurant. while most waiters
take order by the number, i would talk briefly about how each dish is made
and tastes like. in return, i got not only more tips, more importantly lots
of compliments. - which in turn boost the confidence and drive. Yes, i was
a self trained talker :-) and no, i still don't like football or baseball.
