I have been interviewed twice in the same R program.
Here is the PD's feedback:
Last year: During IV, you behave just like a robot and conservatively.
This year: During IV, you are more open up and stand up to yourself.
Last year: Your English is subpar my expectation.
This year: Your English is much better. Did you hire any tutor?
Last year: You are less confident.
This year: You are more confident.
Last year: I feel that you template the answers. Even after IV, I do not
feel that I know you well.
This year: You are more spontaneous and more yourself. You clearly let me
know what you want in the future. I have a clearer idea of what a person you
are.
My lessons:
(1) My mentor is awesome. He has fantastic interpersonal skills. I worked
closely with him for also 8 months. He taught me a lot how to speak and
behave like a American clinician.
(2) Be yourself and be spontaneous. Always have something to say. In this
interview, I also mentioned what I disliked.
(3) Never lie or hide. If you do not like something, let them know. Don't
pretend to like or know.
(4) If you do not know, just say I do not know but I would like to find out.
No one expects to know everything. They just try to test if you are honest
and know your limits.
(5) Always be positive about yourself.
To be continued.......

(5) You must show yourself to possess certain qualities like perseverance,
adaptiveness, goal-orientedness....... You must show them that you have
personalities, not just simply nice and soft. Tell them an amazing story to
show your quality. Never and ever template your answers. If they do not
feel that they could know you, you are done.
(6) Have a better understanding of the program. Do tons of prep work. Do
know the names of each interviewer. Do not mis-pronouce their names.
(7) Be sure to interact with residents and other candidates well. Pre-IV
dinner is even more important than IV itself sometimes. If you are called
to an IV, PD likes you. Second, you must show you can get along with other
residents. They have super concern about it.
(8) Behave like a clinician or M4 student. That is hard part. If you do not
have an MD mentor, it is very disadvantageous. I can say for sure if you
simulate your MD mentor for more than 4 months on a daily basis, your IV
will be totally different. In addition, your MD mentor must be American
born.
(9) Don't practice your IV too much. No practice could kill you but
overpractice could also kill you.
(10) Don't be over polite. PD said that Chinese are overpolite and they are
unapproachable. Do not say :thank you very much- Thanks will be fine. Don'
t say "exactly" . Say "I agree". Don't echo what they have said. Have your
own opinion.
(11) Check your ego. Do not say I have tons of clinical experience in China
and I could teach other residents how to do endoscopy. Simply say I
practiced 10 yrs internal medicine in China.
(12) Don't say too much about your research unless you have a research day
interview. They are more concerned about your clinical competency.

I think that my English is improved, but not totally different. The more
important is that I speak more like a clinician or Med student not a Ph.D.
student. In addition, I did not hire any English tutor.

Thanks
But if you do your OB in radiology, how can you find more chance to speak
like a clinician or Med student.

Ph.D.

Thank you for sharing. With your confidence, perseverance and kindness, your dream can become true very soon.
Would you pleaes elaborate on your understanding of the difference of Ph.D.
student vs. Med student? It is very interesting.

I agree with Houstongirl1. That is correct! Don't show you are sharp. But
show you are stable and composed. Lower your speech speed(haha..I could not
do it myself).

i guess the PD is from the program you are observing... HE is so nice to
tell you into so many details.
It is very lucky to have somebody pointing out exactly / honestly what is
improvable when you failed. For me, it is easy to develop " Learned
Helplessness" if I have NO idea what was wrong when I failed or rejected.

Hehe :p Agree!
Thanks a lot to Haowei for sharing.
Personally, I think if you are a likable person in general, it would be
enough being yourself in IVs.
If interpersonal skills are not your strength, then you have to work on that
first. It's hard to hide...
The key, in my view, is always to try to understand others from their point
of view and NEVER to be judgemental.

Well, another though... You must know their expectations and then adapt your
answers.
Senario 1: 2 day interview in an academic center. If you have a 2-day
interview, one of which is research day interview, they expect you to be a
physician scientist type and they also expect to perform tons of research
during residency. Last year, I got 2 interviews like 2 days iv in
paediatrics and internal medicine. My lesson is that I did not emphasize a
lot on research. Haha. of course, I blew them both.
Senario 2: 1 day interview in an academic center program which never or
hardly enlists any IMGs before. This one seems intimidating. Actually not.
If you could get an IV like this, PD or Chair must like you a lot and would
like you to be in. But they hesitate because they do not know IMG or CMG
well. My 2 cents is never let AMGs intimidate you. In fact, PDs and chairs
are easiest to "fool around" since they do not know IMGs well. Tell them
something that AMGs can barely do. Tell them how you learned English, how
you deal with the hardship. Tell them how your english was when first
arrived in US and how you quickly improved in 2 years, bla bla bla.... The
deal breaker is that during iv, you are pretty conservative and unwilling to
open up. If they do not feel they fully know you even after IVs, they will
not let you in.
Senario 3: 1 day IV in a community consisting 99% IMGs including CMGs. They
do not want to hear too much stuff about your research. They are more
concerned if you are hands-on the 1st day in residency. Focus on your
clinics. What is your experience to deal with the patients.. How you handle
stress.. How you handle cultural diversity.. How many Indian friends you
have.. How you like curry chicken.. blabla...
