Medi, and hope my experience may be a little helpful.
Took the beast on Oct3, 260/89, extremely lucky. As you can see, the 2-digit
score is re-scaled, and it is no longer reported to residency programs.
Graduation >>10 years, full-time research. I read thru and took notes of
Goljan RRP, Lippincott's illustration Biochemistry and Pharmacology, and
Lange Medical Microbiology before I started my preparation seriously for ~ a
year, centered on the FA and UW. One block per day, followed by studying
each question carefully, and annotation on FA. The correction rate started
off ~76%, improved a little over time, and the final overall is 79%. I did
not go thru it another round (I tried one block but the correction rate is
artificially high).
UWSA1: 760/262, ~2months (prior to exam).
NBME 1-4: offline, 92~94%.
NBME 7: 600, 9/11 (tried to stress myself so I took it at 11:00pm after a
busy day)
NBME 5: 610, 9/22
NBME 6: 610, 9/24
NBME 11: 630, 9/28
NBME 12: 630, 9/30
UWSA2: 800/265, 10/01
USMLE CD: 94%, 10/02
I carefully looked into the questions I missed in NBME 5, 6, 7, 11, and 12,
and found most were behavioral science (my answers tend to be a little too
aggressive), and anatomy (I should have read beyond FA). For those blocks I
FELT hard, the results were actually not bad. So, 1 day prior to the real
exam, I read a little high-yield anatomy, and talked to myself that I'll be
calm and do great.
For the real exam, my first 3-4 blocks were hard. I got many questions on
Immunology and Genetics. Knowing only the concepts listed in FA on Genetics
was a big mistake. Some really straightforward concepts in Genetics was
beyond the coverage in FA, and they should be grasped easily somewhere else,
maybe in Kaplan notes. Questions in microbiology, pharmcology, and of
course pathology are not very hard, some were astonishingly straightforward.
I paced myself slower to think more carefully. For those "very hard"
questions, 1/3 were obviously hopeless, so smile. 2/3 are still doable, they
are designed to test your ability to apply what you learned and solve the
problem. You may read and have some impression on the topics during your
preparation, perhaps not directly related to the questions, but this is the
time you will see how they are put together.
The environment in Prometric center is great, can get outside during the
break and had a little fresh air.
What I would do differently?
1. Read more, perhaps I'll choose Kaplan notes.
2. Read some CK materials might help, especially on some DDx.
3. Would not use Lippincott's illustration on biochem and pharmacology, not
saying they are not good books, just too much details for step1.
4. Goljan RRP: absolutely excellent material. I would rank it second only to
FA. Some chapters such as hematology are definitely overkill.
5. Read and study way more on Behavioral science, not sure which material to
use, or perhaps only more dissection in the practice questions.
While I'm happy with the score, afterall, this is only an exam. How
important could it possibly be when you are evaluated? I still have CS and
CK on the horizon, but I cannot help reminding myself, THE WHOLE PACKAGE!

发帖数: 16 | 7 thanks. Funny thing is when I drove to the Prometric center in the morning,
there was the discussion about MJ overdose trial. When I finished the exam
and drove back, the song in radio was "Just beat it, beat it... showin' how
funky strong is your fight...", you can imagine how loud it was in my car.
One more thing, don't forget to study a little the traffic pattern in the
morning of your exam day, you may run into rush hour traffic. | n*****n
