Emma inspiration
Why I want to be a dr?
What is your dream? Why I can’t make it real?
If you want a change, do sth different, do sth.
If you can’t make your dream real, do you treat yourself as a loser?
Now the meeting will give you a chance to improve yourself.
Everybody has different problem, eg: score, language, interview skills, etc.
The truth is that the best IMG is just as equal as the average AMG. Why?
Because when we are making a life using a second language, AMG is getting
the standard clinic training. An AMG has a 2-year clinic training before he/
she matches to a program.
Match list: best AMG, average AMG, Caribbean, IMG( Indian> others).
So bottom line, keep a way to make a life, do as much as you can.
Forget your failure in the past, do sth to improve yourself.
Setback- sb needs several attempts to be successful. Chinese saying-人各有命

First speaker - Pathology
很谦虚, 只 针对pathology
99/99/1st CS/step 3, BMU bachelor, Fuwi Master of surgery, American PhD.
Weakness: old Graduate.
1st application, try every specialty. Most interview from pathology. Then
just focus on pathology.
Step 3 is important, not necessary high, while must 1st pass.
Who is a good candidate? American PhD/ science working experience.
Observership: if apply clinic tract, OB is necessary; if pathology, not
necessary if you continue in research field. One ROL from a pathologist is
good enough.
Connection: not always work.
Application materials:
PS: not just describe what you have done. Better to explain what you have
done can make a difference in your clinic practice. Must make your
application make sense.
Application materials and ROL: must make it ready as early as possible. Some
PD complained – they can just have energy to read the early application
Deans letter: not necessary for interview.
CA letter- no sense, just increase a little number of interview, except you
live in CA
Program Number: as many as possible. Most IMG applied >300 programs. Most
IMG learn to behave naturally during interview gradually- it means that more
interviews can give you more chance.
How to make your graduate year short? List your clinic master graduate year.
Email to program: even no interview at first, send email, it can bring some
chance.
How to confront the challenging questions, such as you have a long research
experience, while it is not related to clinic. A: first Calm down, accept it
, then give an explanation- let them know your experience is important for
your clinic practice.
Positive attitude: very important.
Backup: if not match, what can we do? Eg: Clinic chemistry lab,

2nd speaker - 2nd time try, matched to IM
How to increase IM interview number?
How to behave during the interview?
96 bachelor, 230+/240+/CS 1st/step3, American lab research. Weakness: Grad
17, no GC
Have shared his failure experience, emma etc gave a lot of treasure advice.
Suggests: try to make the application package as good as possible.
If applying multiple specialties, prep material differently. While we can’t
make ourselves look perfect to all specialties, finally, we can know which
specialty fit ourselves best.
I didn’t get interview of pathology, I guessed that my research background
is not good enough.
We’d better get at least one ROL focusing for one specialty. I have IM OB
x3 months, in 3 different specialties. Best to get the American clinician’s
ROL –demonstrate that we can be qualified in American medical system. One
of the clinician has given a solid example in the ROL.
How to find OB? – send email to all the clinicians, finally there will be
someone will help you.
The advantage of OB: know what is the concern in real clinic practice? We
can make a better prep for IV. Eg: what did you do during your OB?
PS- tell others why you are qualified. Proofreading by native speakers. Do
it as early as possible.
How to sell myself? - Use my net work. Send congratulations to the friends
who have matched, keep in touch with them. Send my application to all my
friends, they all sent my application to the program. At least one of my iv
coming from my friends’ recommendation. They also helped me do mock iv. So
when I went to iv, I was very confident. I got the support from my research
boss who found 2 iv for me. I have sent email to all the programs 2-3 times
before and after submitting my application. Finally I got a lot of interview
, so conclusion- CMG is not aggressive enough.
Say thanks to my iv group. We share iv information, material prep, confort
to each other.

3rd speaker- 1st attempt to IMG, 1st choice
Applied to IM and pediatrics,
Grad 11yr, American phd, GC
Package: I have prepared to match for a long time. I have done volunteer in
US clinic.
I have no step 3. Several programs have asked if you have step 3 score.
Hand-on externship: important. Make friend with the clinicians you shadow.
Chat with them, let them treat you as a friend that they are really happy to
help you get into a program. Eg: Make some cookies as a gift. Must make
sure your ROL are very positive.
PS: some wonderful stories will make a PS personally. I joined American
clerkship, which help to modified PS, CV. Make paper work attractive.
ROL: strong/ good is just a general LOR. Super/excellent –is really good
ROL.
IV: not too much ROL. Attitude: must be full of enthusiasm, treat yourself
as a dr, show confidence, say hello to everyone. tell other people your
story during your externship/OB, it make your iv personal, impressive. I
repeated my iv question-answer several times a day till I can tell my story
very smoothly and naturally. My personality is very easy to work with. Give
the example. Keep smile, control speak speed,

4th speaker-Family medicine.
Not have a strong package
2002 grad,
1y cardiology resident, American nurse 4yr,
210/step/ CS 2nd at/ step 3, 2nd time applied, totally 12 iv. I have applied
IM, FM.
Local program-better to talk to the PD directly, to know if they are
interested to you, what you can do to improve yourself.
Email pre-application: get 10 positive reply, while only 6 gave me iv. –
better to remind program that you did apply.
Apply program as many as possible.
Attended the Dr. Lanjian iv training/post match talk.
Find connection- I work as a nurse: tell people around your target, open my
heart, tell them what you want to do. One attending is really helpful, he
gave an excellent ROL and help me improve my IV skill. Eg; what is your
weakness, -answer should emphasize what you have done to improve yourself.
Step 3: I get a good score, it can make up some for the CS failure.
I also applied pathology, even I have no research background.
How to explain my failure for SC. Honest to tell them why? How did you
improve?
Show you are a team player.
What are the program looking for from all these candidate?- teamplayer,
hardworker.
What is major difference between FM and IM? FM focuses on outpatient. They
take serious if you can stay locally after training.
Apply IMG friendly program

2011 applied , 300 program, 5 iv, no match
2012 applied, 11 iv, I pre-match, not accept
2013, matched.
Know my weakness- why I can’t match. Match situation changes greatly yearly
. Not take my graduate year serious at first.
Study program deeply, not just
Find and use connection as much as possible.
IV skill was not good enough.
Package: not unique, too long. Emphasize too much on research.
Realized old IMG is in a very bad situation compared to other applicants.
Make application as much perfect as possible.
Not try univ program- too competitive. Community program- may prefer olf IMG
–who can get into good fellowship in the future.
Attended mock interview as much as possible.

7th speaker –Pathology
12yr, 230+/230+/1st/ step 3. Chinese pathology master, American phd.
Pathology 20+iv,
How to show passion in pathology? Most PD know that someone may make
pathology as a backup.
Why you are interested in pathology? What did you do to make yourself close
to pathology?
OBx3months, I shadowed 2 pathologists, at first I asked ROL from them, while
they suggested me to ask ROL from the chief attending. At first he said he
was not familiar with me, I told him what I had done during the OB, what I
had learned. Then he said yes. I send my PS and CV to the program. And he
gave a strong ROL.
IV: learn program from website or connection. During iv, tell them how much
you know the program- what is the strength of the program. The tone of iv –
make the interviewer comfortable. Learn the interviewer’s background,
research topic from website.
Dinner with resident: recommend 帖子“我的野路子…”by coffee. We can get
more information of the program.
Presentation: make 2 cases ready, one CP, one AP.
Prepare a one-page CV, give it to the interviewer during the iv.
How to answer “do you have more q about our program?”, I changed my topic
as “can I tell you more about my story.”

Sorry, took a break, missed some talks
Pediatrics- very impressive story
Grad 25Yr? Chinese peds working exp
219/222?/1st CS, American research,
Really iv once in New York, 2 iv through connection
So IV is really important for old IMG due to the limited opportunity.
Talked with the director on the way to another building. Fortunately one of
the faculty who interviewed me also
from San Francisco- we have a lot of thing to talk. At the beginning of
the interview, faculty still reviewed my material. I waited a proper time to
talk
with him. We started the topics about his children.
Different Qs?
Why come back to clinic after so many years? Tell them my story: my second
son, early birth, grew up normally- very touching. My interest is NICU.
Why choose medicine? In the past, Chinese
Show the pictures of my children to the interviewers.
Summary, be ready for interview. Make our own stories impressive.

PS- tell my story to an American friend, due to culture different, they may
understand our stories in a different angel.
IV: do not feel too nervous, on the other way, do not feel too relaxed.
Answering questions based on the rule- why I am qualified in this position.
Eg: what is the difference between China and America? A: Chinese children
get vaccine in school, while Americans get it in clinic. Culture difference-
related medicine.
IM- prepare for medicine questions very well.
Group study: share information.
Attitude: at first I was not confident. At the end of my second OB, the dr I
shadowed told me “I can see you in the residency”. We must be pride of
ourselves. Everyone is unique. Be confident that if program doesn’t take
you, it is the loss of the program.
Externship: American extership.
comment: high EQ is also important in match.

Matched to IM
American PhD, Post-dr, long grad year.
ROL- my present boss gave me a strong ROL.
Find connection- get more iv chance.
PS- story must be personal. If applying multiple specialties, every PS must
be different.
IV: gather a question list, familiar with every Q, my tutor is Dr. Wen/ Dr.
Wing? - background, CMG, attending.
Some conversation: learn how to chat with the interviewers.
Body language:
Do you have other questions? A: do you have any teaching opportunity? If yes
, I was TA during my phD, teaching pre-med student.
How to emphasize research experience? My research experience will help me to
do a better job in clinic research, so I will have a good opportunity for
fellowship, while now I will focus on clinic work.
Talking w PD requires high skills. If you can do it well, you can get
matched, on the other way, you may lose it.
If you have connections, mention it during interview. Appreciate their help.
It is also a good topic to let program learn you more.
Praise the program on some solid reason, eg: program support residents …
evident medicine.
Thank you letter. Mention sth special, such as some topics just between the
interviewer and you.

Add some more speakers' talks here.
1.Matched pathology
No pathology experience, only did path OB
Arrive an hour prior to the interview time
Get relaxed after the first interview
Preinterview dinner: be there early, talk with others. Had a nice talk with
a technician, and he braged XX in front of PD, thus impressed PD
One page CV issue: Although prepared totally 3 pages of CV, put all shining
experiences on the first page.
Hobby: hiking, many interviewers asked about hobby
Focused on pathology application:
Talked with interviewer about football, kids, piano, team player
Research experience: why you are doing research, and want to come back to
pathology?
Since you are phd, talk about your research. You’d better talk in an
interesting way.
When answering interviewer’s questions, the first half is the direct answer
to the question, the second half is to lead the topic to your strengths…
When interviewers ask what else questions you have, talk about the resident
you met, and what advantages he talked about the program, to show that you
like this program, how you are trying to get familiar with the program. Do
not just say nothing. Try to impress interviewer and show yourself.
RL: what is good RL? Do not just say smb observed one month. This is
actually very negative RL.
We need four RLs. PhD mentor’s RL is also good, at least this can be very
strong, showing that you are reliable, a good team player.
How to know if program likes you or not? if you have gut, directly ask how
do you think about me? Or call or email to ask. The best time is
thanksgiving, christmas, new year, or chinese new year. They may not reply
to you, but if you have sent several emails to the same person, he might
remember your name.

2.Matched IM
220+/240+/200+. CS 2nd pass, 8month OB.
Prepare one page CV to interviewers.
If have done many OB, make a clear CV for interviewer
Matched three years and finally succeeded.
Show advantages, and hide weakness. Let interviewers ignore your weakness.
4 years clinical experience in CHINA, 6M OB in US
How to impress interviewers?
Career plan? Prepare cases especially for your future subspecialty.
If interviewer asks you about a case, you need to think about all the
possible diagnosis, differential diagnosis, even some very rare diagnosis.
During OB, when every time confronted with some interesting cases, do more
homework, like doing a presentation. These materials can be used for your
future interview. For part-time OB, it might be hard, but try to spend time
preparing cases.
How to get IV? email, connection, call…
Connection doesn’t mean definite offer. Call PD and leave message, but they
are very busy during IV season.
Confidence is from the bottom of your heart. Be confident during interview.
Lanjing's class is very helpful.

3.MATCHED IM
CS failed once, and got only 1 IV, and succeeded
How to prepare IV?
Prepare all the questions. Write down all the answers.
Research can prepare myself for better evidence-based medicine.
What is your strength?
Why this hospital?
Control time, and be concise.
Find all the info, about program, about PD. Find similarity with the person,
or some common points to make communications easier and more comfortable.
Find differences of this program compared with other programs, to be
specific
How to present a case? Firstly to be interesting, otherwise they will forget
it or feel bored.
Check online how they presented cases, especially the same case.
Practice interview with husband, friends, work colleagues.
Youtube contains many interviews, not limited to residency interview.
How to write thank you letter?
Write thank you letter specifically based on every interview. Provide more
info if you were asked a question during the IV. Do some homework and give
them feedback, which might impress interviewers.
Weakness: eg. Speak too fast, I already noticed this. I slowed down.
Do not be too nervous. Practice!
Establish a group for interview practice.

4.Matched pathology
1st app: no OB, late CK, no STEP 3, got 3 IVs
2nd app: mainly applied pathology.
Disadvantages: Old CMG >15 yrs, gap (full-time prepare exams)
Advantages: Path phd, good publications, strong RLs.
Did OB for path, externership is more important for IM
focused on one subspecialty related to your research. Find a subspecialty
recommender for RL and link your experience so that it is easier for him to
write RL
2 yrs clinical experience in CHINA
Did IM ob, shadow hospitalist, Finish step 3
IVs are mostly path, no advantage in IM
Prepare IV: group practice
Although some questions are not asked, still prepare them.
Relaxed, smile, be pleasant
One IV in underserved area: say I have been to Free clinic, seen patients
with no insurance. I would like to come to serve these patients.
Group interaction: others’ opinions can be inspiring. Do not be shy to
share.
Summary: Step 3, path ob. GAP with no jobs can be filled with OB experiences
, so that interviewers know that you are still actively involved in clinical
work.
IV PREPARATION: Dr. Wing (? not sure), help with IV practice
Research: help me know more about disease mechanism, American culture, I
want to come back to pursue my original dream.
