今天很机会和一个attending聊了一下,我特地问了一下,how to behave well in
observationships.
If somebody is
in a hurry or late, do not ask questions. Say: I am really interested in xxx
and have some questions here. I am thinking maybe we could talk about that
later.
2. Be OUTGOING. Do not be shy. Although they are always in a hurry, they
like questions. Get every chance to stand out and ask.
intern不知道,attending如果问 Does anyone know this?
I am not sure but I think……。Do NOT make others look bad!
4. Always offer something but be ready if they don’t need it. Find the
people who are post-call. They want to go back sleeping and need hands. Say:
I can see you are very busy. Is there anything I can help? Do you need me
to write the note? Check the lab? Make the phone call?Just OFFER something.
It is OK that they say no.
5. Get along with nurses, same to social worker, case managers or other
random people. They can be very influential, especially senior nurses. Talk
with them about why you are here. Medicine wards are boring for them. They
are interested in people and story. Try to offer help if you are there and
they need extra hands.
6. Say this to the patient if you really have nothing to do: I am an
observer but I really want to help. Do you have any question? If I know the
answer, I will let you know but if I do not know, I will try to help you
find it.
7. Don’t say bad things about people. People gossip!
8. Good questions come from reading. Do not leave if the day is slow. Just
stay there and read. Explain why you ask the question. Expose your thinking
process to avoid stupid questions.
8. When patient weeps, pass the tissue.
9. Think the patient as your family, like grandmother. Pull back the food
table after checking the patient.
10. I am really curious that why you do xxx this way.
11. Difference between students and graduates: the team gonna have higher
expectations on graduates.
13. Read the chart in advance. Get to know why patients are in the hospital.
14. Deal with absence of patient contact: I am really interested in the
cases. Would you mind if I read the chart or exam the patients?
15. When facing difficult people, find out why they are difficult to deal
with. If it is about their personality, change a person to shadow.
16. be equipped with sharp eyes. See what others do and set everything up
before the team runs. Take initiatives
17. Ask for feedbacks. If feedbacks are good, ask for letters.
18. later in the observationship, or during the shift of attendings, talk
with them. Say: I really LOVE this hospital and cannot imagine a better
place to do my residency. Are there anybody around I may talk with about my
plan?
18. Have fun there.
shine in the interview。
Tips:
1. Practice the answers loud and out!!!
2. Practice conversational talk. Do not too much time on word choosing.
3. During the interview, talk to other interviewees first. Be soft.
But do talk! Just to warm your tongue up. Most international graduates do
not feel good until the end of the interview.
4. Don’t say you want big cities. Say ”I am flexible and would like to
see more about America, not only New York or Chicago.”
5. IMGs make people worry about language and knowledge the most. The
scores explain the knowledge part and the talk explains the language.
6. Talk about your own city. Remember to mention population and give a
comparison to give them a general picture. Like, Hangzhou is a of the
similar size to Boston.
7. At the end of January, write a letter to programs interviewed in
December, November and October.
8. Thank you cards. A dying art which we should use! Send one to PC too!
Right after the interview. Then the email.
9. Get a pocket square from Macy match your suit and tie.
Questions and answers:
1. What questions can I ask during the hospital tour? Being quite? Or tons
of questions? What is the line?
3 main questions. Don’t go too much!
What about the cath lab? What are the endoscopy room?
What is the Relationship with residents and nurses, ancillary service?
2. What questions should be avoided? E.g. How many nurses do you have? How
many ER admissions does each call have?
Any questions implying you are lazy. E.g Do residents take a lot of calls?
3. Should I answer questions during the morning report?
Be silent. Observe the relationships between the speaker and the audience.
Do not stand out here!
4. What are behavior questions asking for? Like what is the best memory as
a child?
They are looking for how you unfold your thinking process. Answers do not
matter. Show them how you think.
5. How could I stand out since the medicine is a conservative field and
everyone supposed to behave conservatively?
Internal medicine does not require people to stand out. This is not
dermatology or neurosurgery. Just show them the language, easy personality
and hard-working trait. They do not want people with personality disorders!
6. About the most difficult time. Can I say right now, at the interview
season?
NO! Look at the interview season as fun! They want us to enjoy the interview
! They do not want to see us stress out.
7. How about big issue? Like election and Obama care?
Definitely know Obama care and how it will affect internal medicine. If they
ask our preference, say:
"I cannot vote right now but if I can, it is still a difficult situation.
For Obama…., For Romney,….' Just balance both sides.
8. How can promote the IV from a good one to an exceptional one?
It is not within our reach. It is about chemistry. Interviewer and
interviewee click! So just be yourself and present yourself properly. We
have no control over the interviewer.
9. Principles of three. Three characters, three questions.
Not really. Two is enough sometimes.
10. Is it a good idea to stay after the interview and talk with the PD
about my eager for the program?
No. If they offer, we stay. Otherwise, it has been a long day and PD still
has lots of work to do.
11. Should I mention fellowships when interviewing community hospitals?
Look at its website. If they have fellowship placement, definitely say it!
They like people be ambitious and see fellowships placement as an honor to
the program. But, if they never successfully have people getting fellowship,
do not say it. It will not sound like a match.
12. How can I tell whether the program is interested in me? They look so
nice to everyone!
Later in the interview season, programs will send letters to their ideal
candidates. This is the only way.
13. How can I handle the causal talk? Why is the talk so causal!?
Be relaxed. But bring the talk back to yourself! If possible, bring back to
medicine as well. Keep in mind about three most important things you want to
say and the rest is just causal. Like why internal medicine, why here, your
strength.
14. What if I do not know the answer to the questions?
Be frank. Say” Well, this is a very good question .I don’t know what is
the answer but I would like to approach it like his……
Or I don’t know this but I am happy to look it up and let you later..
15. When interviewing with American students, they are confident, speak
better language and know the system better, how can I present myself
properly?
We have the same knowledge. We take patients as good or even better than
they do. It is like basketball. Your goal is not competing against certain
player on the other side. We focus on ourselves. Be the best we can be.
Sometimes, speaking more is a disadvantage.
Last but not the least, here is an associated IM program director's take to
the interview: Interviews just want to make sure the interviewee is neither
crazy nor mean. Just do not be crazy or mean.
