Jeremy Lin: Humble In Rise to Stardom
February 13, 11:24 AM EST
Jonah Ballow
KnicksNow.com
Twitter
“If you want to test a man’s character, give him power” -- Abraham
Lincoln.
There is one thing I can tell you about Jeremy Lin watching him walk on the
Knicks team plane after a mano-y-mano battle with Kobe Bryant on a night
where he dropped a career-high 38 points on the Lakers.
It’s the same guy.
The same second-year point guard that waltzed on that plane prior to a
Charlotte trip on January 24 following a brief stint in the D-League when he
was not considered a household name.
At the moment, national scribes are pounding their keyboards to illustrate
the remarkable Disney-esque story. Twitter timelines are dominated by Lin-
related comments and puns on his name. Celebrities are fascinated, fellow
NBA players are intrigued, and the world-wide audience is consumed with this
breakout star.
The one person who seems remarkably poised in the midst of the tornado of
attention is Lin. Need proof? Listen to his postgame comments directly
after a jaw-dropping performance against the Lakers, a game in which the
Madison Square Garden crowd was chanting M-V-P when he attempted free throws.
“I’m not really too worried about proving anything to anybody. I think as
a team we are growing and just trying to build on this momentum and I think
that’s what everybody is buying into and that’s why we are becoming
dangerous,” Lin stated in front of a horde of media members on Friday night.
You will never hear an ego-driven postgame commentary from Lin, even though
he is garnering a tremendous amount of admiration. The Harvard graduate
receives the focus on the floor without Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo
Anthony in the lineup, yet he blends in nicely off the court as just one man
among a group of professional athletes.
“I love it. I’m glad this happened to him in all honesty, it couldn’t
have happened to a better guy because he’s one of the guys that can take
all of this that’s going on,” Tyson Chandler explained with a bright smile
on his face. “Every time I open the paper, every time I turn on the TV,
you know I went to a fashion show and I’m not getting questions about Amar
’e or Melo, it’s about this Lin kid. It’s very exciting but the way he
comes around and the way he goes about things, you would never know all of
this stuff is going on. That’s what I love about him.”
At 23 years old, Lin is experiencing a life-changing week that included a 25
-point game against New Jersey, 28 in a win over Utah, 10 assists to lift
New York past Washington, a historic 38-point outburst to topple the Lakers,
and a clutch free throw to sink Ricky Rubio and the Wolves on Saturday
night. Over the last week, Lin is averaging 26.8 points, eight assists, 4.2
rebounds, and two steals per game in 39 minutes of action. Additionally,
after defeating Minnesota, Lin has totaled the most points of any player in
his first 4 starts since the ABA/NBA merger, surpassing Allen Iverson.
These ridiculous numbers would make the most humble person take a step back
and bask in the glow of their own accomplishments.
Not Lin.
He continues to direct the attention to the team, as heard in the Knicks
locker room following the gutsy 100-98 road win against the Wolves.
“That’s the beauty of our team, we never gave up, we let Jared [Jeffries],
and Tyson lead us, Landry [Fields] and Shump [Iman Shumpert] in the second
half offensively, Novak [Steve] the big three. I struggled a lot tonight
but everybody who came in gave us a lift and picked us up,” Lin humbly
commented.
There remains a significant amount of time left in the 2011-12 season but
the unexpected rise of Lin is a truly great sports narrative. In fact, Lin
may have a greater appreciation of his current success due to the struggles
along the way.
“We’re just thankful,” Lin described the emotions of his family. “The
journey was very different, it’s been tough at times, and my family has
been through a lot.”
He added, “We’re just trying to enjoy everything right now and we’re
trying to stay together and make sure we handle everything the right way and
that’s just what we are focused on.”
For a young man who was waived twice, in the D-League four times, and had to
scratch and claw for this opportunity, he seems to show no signs of slowing
down.
The same Jeremy Lin who played a friendly game of Monopoly against his
teammates on the plane, joked, and shared laughs over a week ago is the
mirror image without any alteration in his personality today. While the
craze around him continues, he should receive recognition for his humble
approach with the newfound power and success.

New York knicks organization and fans should be rejoicing with joy, because
they did not only find a new basketball star (not to mention how fast Lin
emergence from nobody 2 wks. ago), But, they have found somebody who is
clutch shooter, which takes time to develop but Lin did it in 2 wks. It is a
very unbelievable story.
Songlover2012 11 hours ago
I think Lin is not only showing a great basketball player he can be but he
is also an inspiration to people who are struggling in all forms of
sufferings, that we should not stop or get discourage. We should continue to
fight against our shortcomings like what Lin did in the last 2 minutes of
game with Toronto Raptors. What Lin did is inspirational. Everything is
possible.

its simple and logical! Go Knicks!

The best article I read since Linsanity began. Now everyone knows how good
he can drive, pass, and shoot, but it's his mentality to go through all
these attentions that admires me the most! Good job, Johan

Great Article with full of truth and unbiased opinion. Very encouraging
story for all the people who are still fighting for their own spots. Sudden
success is the easiest way to destroy a young man, glad to see Jeremy can
stay the way he has been taught by his mom and dad from Taiwan.

Truly Lin is a man full of character. He has not only elevated their play
but also the way the Knicks organization is viewed.

Great article. Not enough has been written about how Jeremy is atypical of
today's self-centered, money and fame grabbing superstar basketball players.
How his approach should be what influential basketball players strive to be
other than we often see and how his unselfish approach can positively
singlehandily turn around a team. To me, that's the real story.

If bench players can outperform starters a team's day to day starters with
the toughest going to the T-Wolves.. man what will happen when the Starters
and back ... The Garden will be nice again!!! Am sure the win against the
Lakers at home is the big energizer thus far!

"I'd just like to thank God for this opportunity to be written about,
and for letters and grammar for their great job forming sentences in this
article. Jonah was amazing and we all just came together for the piece."
; - probably what JLin would say after reading this.

Lin is making the players on the floor better. Our so called bench are
beating these teams during this 5 game streak. Everyone have stepped it up.
When stat and melo come back, watch out!
