A short journey of ZocDoc:
1. A painful experience from a well-trained consultant
In 2007 a McKinsey consultant, Massoumi, had a sinus infection. As the plane
descended, he felt a stabbing pain, like an ice-pick was being jammed in
his ear. The changing pressure had ruptured his eardrum, muting all sound
but for a terrible ringing. For four days, he can’t find a doctor for a
quick check up.
2. A company with three employed born in 2007 summer
Massoumi, his colleague at McKinsey Oliver and Nick a young IT engineer
founded Zocdoc in 2007 summer. Early working style in that summer: sharing
one table, working every night until 3 or 4 am, ate non-stop Chipotle.
Oliver was in charge of doctor portion of the website while Nick in charge
of patient portion. Massoumi ran around to get doctor sign up
3. Value proposition of ZocDoc
America is short about 13K doctors now and will be short of 50K-130K doctors
by 2025,due to the trend of aging baby boomers, retiring doctors and
population growth.
Average delay to see a doctor in New York is 19 days, 49 days in Boston.
Around 14-42% appointment ends up cancelled or no show by various reasons,
as one of them is Emergency Room. About 8-27% ER could be handled by regular
doctors, while in some cities that number is 50%.
What had happened and reshaped the booking system of airlines, will and
should happen in health care industry. Adding scheduling efficiency may do
more to prevent disaster than anything we’ve tried to implement so far.
(Building a two sided marketplace)
Without supply, you can't generate demand. Without demand, it's hard to
convince supply to join. Massoumi went door to door to persuade doctors to
take a chance. PowerPoint in hand, his goal was to get 50 physicians to list
their unfilled appointment times on the site.
The solution to ZocDoc's chicken-egg situation had been one part targeting
specific users, like dentists, whose patients book appointments far in
advance, and one part desperate persuasion. Another side of the solution is
focus in New York.
5. No investor believe it will succeed
Of course New York will be successful, but it's not going to work outside of
New York.
6. Digital Doctor Opportunity (electronic medical records)
In an effort to push medicine into the 21st century, Uncle Sam is requiring
physicians to switch from paper files to electronic medical records (EMR) by
2015, or else penalties will ensue. however, electronic records don't make
doctors money in the short run; digitizing archives is a time-consuming task
that actually costs a medical practice money. So doctors drag their feet.
EMR sales are arduous, plagued with competition and a tough pitch.
On the other hand, booking more appointments, filling schedule gaps and
making more money happens to be an instantly interesting sales proposition
to most doctors. With that proposition, and with a simple monthly fee, a
ZocDoc salesperson can bring on a dozen doctors a month (and sometimes twice
that).

Apple board is a direct and open advertisement for Apple. MITBBS should
delete the apple board if we talk about same logic.
