看看辞源，这个德文词lesen (to read, to gather)，是从中古德文来的。
可是我觉得再往前推，一定和拉丁文的legere有关系。
果然，一翻Oxford Latin Dictionary:
这个lego, legere有九个主要意思：
1. to gather
2. to remove by picking
3. to take away
...
8. to read, peruse, to read out aloud
9. to learn of by reading, read about
当然，这个legο和古希腊文的λεγω同源，λεγω也有这些意思。
