`God Damn America'
Wright, whom Obama has credited with bringing him to Christianity, took a
defiant tone while speaking at the National Press Club in Washington on
April 28. The pastor, who baptized Obama and his children and officiated at
his wedding, previously had stayed silent amid an outcry over past comments
such as ``God damn America.''
Wright's recent media tour had earned some positive reviews until he renewed
his inflammatory statements during the question- and-answer session in
Washington, an event that Acree, a Wright supporter, calls a ``train wreck.''
Wright's comments ``were just totally ridiculous and do not reflect
mainstream thought in the African-American community,'' says Reverend John J
. Hunter, senior minister at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in
Los Angeles.
Acree says Wright may have ``felt torn as to whether to speak up for this
movement he's been fighting for 40 years or to just in his mind bite the
tongue and put a muzzle on and help Obama to pursue his dreams.''
Siege Atmosphere
The controversy has created an atmosphere of siege at the church. The church
has beefed up security, and Reverend Otis Moss III, who formally takes over
for Wright in June, has delivered sermons with titles such as ``How to
Handle a Public Lynching'' and ``Why the Black Church Won't Shut Up.''
Neither Wright nor Moss is granting interviews, according to a church
spokeswoman, Reverend Joan Harrell, and Moss has advised parishioners to
