邓的看法，江泽民认为改革开放始于华国锋，邓在大跃进里的角色，以及邓在六四里的
作用，包括写四二六社论。
1.邓五五开。
“I wanted to know those who supported Deng and those who criticized Deng
from different perspectives. I got to many liberal intellectuals too,
including Some of them told me that if Mao was 70 percent good, Deng was 50
percent good and 50 percent bad.”
2. 改革开放始于华国锋。
When Jiang Zemin came to the U.S. (in 1997) I was the one who organized his
visit to Harvard and I hosted him. Jiang Zemin gave me an interview on his
views of Deng.
Several things surprised me. He wasn’t the one that started reform and
opening. Hua Guofeng did that. Hua Guofeng wasn’t as conservative as he’s
made out to be. He was the originator of the reform and opening.
3. 邓和大跃进 （大跃进时邓为中共总书记）。
And Great Leap Forward, he didn’t stop it. His daughter said he started to
see something was wrong after the Great Leap Forward.
4. 邓写的四二六社论。
The Tiananmen thing was a perfect storm; it shouldn’t have happened. The
students weren’t so upset. But Deng felt if you warn them they’ll shape up.
He wrote an editorial. It doesn't work. So Deng said bring on martial law.
The police can stop it ; so it got stronger. So you bring in military troops
. Deng thought clearing the square was not enough. He told troops to do what
was necessary, including the use of guns.A lot of people were killed.
