盖茨证实将与中国合作开发新型核反应堆

网易科技讯 12月7日消息，据美国媒体报道，微软联合创始人、董事长比尔·盖茨周
三证实，他确实在与中国讨论联合开发更安全的新型核反应堆问题。这位亿万富翁表示
：“这个想法就是建设成本非常低、非常安全并且污染很小的核反应堆”。
盖茨称，他主要是向位于华盛顿州的TerraPower公司投资，该公司正在开发可使用贫铀
的第四代核反应堆。TerraPower称，已就核能项目与印度、砺匏购推渌姨致哿俗
己的计划。上周中国媒体援引核工业集团总经理孙勤的话报道，盖茨先生将与该公司合
作开发核反应堆。
盖茨在中国科技部的谈话中称：“TerraPower正与中国核工业集团和中国政府的很多人
进行非常友好的探讨”，但他也称谈判还处于早期阶段。他表示，未来5年在核反应堆
开发上可能需要投入高达10亿美元的资金。
盖茨在科技部讨论了中国与比尔&梅林达盖茨基金会的合作项目，该项目将支持创新研

.Apparently TerraPower is a sodium cooled Fast Breeder with conventional
steam and electric power production. I do not doubt for a moment that today
’s high-power computers can produce impressive output for all core design
parameters for all kinds of feeds and hence theoretically appearing to
support the concept. However, the very design concept “Fast Breeders” was
thoroughly evaluated and plants were designed –with some slight differences
between plants—and operated for years in several countries. The
conclusions were; “not practical for safe, economic power production”—
same in each country. This was not due to design parameters that can be
changed by the use of different feeds and improved computer programs but
practical engineering considerations as for example the design of equipment
that can operate and be maintained and inspected in the erosive environment
of sodium. There are also many other engineering problems which do not
appear to have been addressed and resolved with the new concept—all leading
to that the Fast Breeder in the past was not pursued as an economic and
safe concept for the production of electric power. Hence. to believe that we
today can routinely design and construct machines like this—”bury the
machines in a hole in the ground” and leave them there for sixty years with
continuous, safe, reliable and economic power production and extraction
without even refueling is probably as close to “Science Fiction” as it
gets. (A Wise Man once said; “To do the same thing repeatedly and expect
different results is “The Definition of Insanity”—which may very well be
what we are facing with respect to Terra Power) Let us at least make sure we
have evaluated all past experiences and addressed all relevant problems
before a decision to build is made.
Among the land based nuclear power plant concepts we have today–mainly –
but not only–The Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) is in front of any other
concept and the most reliable and economic concept available— (no, i do not
work for or represent any PWR vendor)—-”to the extent land based Nuclear
Power is deemed absolutely necessary and wanted”–which should be carefully
considered and may not always be the case. Hopefully. land based Nuclear
Power –in any form that is—is only necessary to be considered as “a
transition” for the Human Race with respect to future energy production.
