AN OCCUPY Wall Street protester was released on $500 bail Monday after he
was charged with slicing a cop’s hands with scissors on New Year's Eve.
Zachary Miller was busted shortly before midnight in lower Manhattan as
protesters tried to retake Zuccotti Park Saturday.
Cops dislodged hundreds of demonstrators from the park after a weeks-long
occupation last fall.
A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Miller, 28, attacked
the cop with scissors as the officer tried to stop him from pushing a
barricade into a marked police van at Broadway and Liberty Street, court
records state.
The cop was treated for his injuries and released.
Bail was set at $500 despite prosecutors’ request that Miller, who has been
arrested at least twice for protest-related activities in California, be
held on $12,000 bail.
Retired New York Episcopal Diocese Bishop George Packard, busted last month
trying to occupy Trinity Church property as part of the protest movement,
appeared in court to support Miller.
Miller faces felony assault charges, and up to seven years in prison.
“He denies all the allegations,” said his defense lawyer, Gideon Oliver.
