From a US perspective and California in particular, there is no depth limit.
Land includes the earth's surface and things permanently attached to it
such as trees and water including the underlying soil all the way to the
center of the earth and the airspace above the land all the way to infinity.
Control and possession of the minerals and substances below the surface
are included with the land. "Real Estate" would include things permanently
attached to the "land" including things made by man. In practice, mineral
rights, water rights, riparian rights, and air rights are often separated
from the surface land rights by deed. Ownership to mineral rights,
particularly in oil and gas states, can become extremely complicated. If
you live in a subdivision in California you probably don't own the mineral
rights as those are typically retained by the developer or original
