现在汽车上用的指南针不是直接的磁体，而是一个芯片。

all sensors on a car connects to one or more controllers.
if one unit needs some info, simply asks the controllers.
all things are connected via BUS, it is an easy thing to send a msg over the
bus and get the answer

No, it does not need to know the wheel's rotation at all. It only needs to
check the state of the transmission which is already in the computer. So
there is no extra hardware or even an extra wire, there is only an extra
line in the software to read the state of the transmission.

sensors do not need to talk with each other directly unless they have to
work very closely, in that case, they will be simply on one chip
For task like figuring out heading direction, it is not a high priority job
and can tolerate some mistake, so sensors does not need to talk with each
other directly

There is a switch on the shift stick, which your car's computer reads to
determine how to operate the transmission. So the shift stick's state (
position) is already in the computer no matter you have a compass or not.

function more accurate and more complicated.
But if you want to design a compass for near-earth satellite, you must have
wheel's information because the satellite is omni-directional.

No, it doesn't need to know wheels' rotation even though this information is
available on most cars. Wheels' rotation information (but no direction of
rotation) is needed by ABS.
It doesn't need to know wheels' angle either. R/D position is good enough
for this function.
