Taiwan medal haul in chemistry event leaves nation at top

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan now ranks above China and South Korea at the 45th
International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Moscow after having snagged 3
golds and 1 silver medal, according to the Ministry of Education.
The medal tally garnered at the event this year by local competitors is the
highest received by the Taiwanese team in the past four years. The gold
medalists were Chen Chun-yi and Tsai Ching-ting from Taipei Municipal
Jianguo High School, and Pai Chih-chun from Ching Cheng High School. While
Li Yi-hsiang from Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School seized silver.
Chen, the youngest of the Taiwanese contestants, was the first Taiwanese
ever to win in the category of practical science, placing him at the
forefront of the scientific discipline, said his coach, Yeh Ming-chang, a
professor from the Academia Sinica Institute of Chemistry.
The young scientist also holds the highest individual score of any
participant in the category, said National Taiwan Normal University
chemistry professor Chang I-jy, who led Taiwan's delegation.
“My students worked hard whether it was in class or during their spare time
,” said Yeh.
He recalled one day after his students had already solved their day's
questions, that they willingly began a search for more mock questions to
better prepare for the competition.
During the weeklong event, contestants were pushed to their limits at
various tests such as the five-hour-long theoretical competition, explained
Chang.
For Chen, the most dangerous time of the competition would probably have
been when he was told by the organizers that they had lost his experiment.
Chen stayed calm every step of the way until the experiment was found, Chang
said.
This year's competition consisted of 291 contestants from 73 countries all
fighting for the 34 gold medals. Taiwan has once again proven itself in
front of the global community and has built upon its previous successes,
such as its first-place finishes in 1993, 1997 and 2009, the ministry said. |

得3金1银，与中国大陆、韩国并列国际排名第一。
台湾在历届化学奥赛表现优异，曾在1993年、1997年、2009年拿下国际排名第一，
今年是第四度。
今年台湾代表队由台湾师范大学化学系教授王忠茂等多位教授负责培训，7月中旬
前往俄罗斯莫斯科参赛。遴选出的4位选手中，彰化县精诚高中学生白植竣、台北市建
国高中陈君奕、蔡京庭获得金牌，建国高中李逸翔获得银牌。
其中最难得的是，陈君奕同时获得实作第一名。根据代表团团长、台师大化学系教
授张一知转述，今年实作题目非常繁琐，又多是重复量测，很多选手都无法做完，陈君
奕却耐心十足，一一破解难关。
不过，比赛过程中出现一个插曲，陈君奕的实作竞赛作品一度被主办单位搞丢，所
幸后来找回来，成绩没有受到影响。陈君奕拥有不错的抗压性，面对比赛曲折，也能控
制情绪，不影响作答表现。
教育部指出，国际化学奥赛获得奖牌的学生，可以保送大专化学相关科系。金牌可
得到奖金新台币20万元、银牌10万元、铜牌5万元。
目前代表团成员正在俄罗斯参访，预计28日返抵国门。1020724
