As a 3rd generation Asian American and supporter of your efforts to date, I
want to applaud the accomplishments of your group's efforts and also express
my concerns about moving forward with these protests. First, I want to
commend all leaders of this movement for organizing the online petition,
providing clear instructions on how to file a complaint with the FCC, making
our voices heard and getting a written formal apology from a major news
network like ABC, an on air apology from Jimmy Kimmel as well as an in
person apology today from JK and getting the video/skit off the air. I don't
think you all realize what a MAJOR accomplishment this is and how big of a
statement you have made to all major US television networks. Thanks to you,
our voice has been heard!
Moving forward now, I caution against further protests against JK and/or ABC
. The reason I say this is because for the American public, the issue has
been voiced and addressed. ABC has issued an apology and JK has issued an
apology. If we continue to protest by demanding a better apology or
demanding that JK be fired (which ABC is not going to do), we will start
looking like irrational bullies which only creates sympathy for ABC and
particularly for JK. I've seen it happen time and time again. Ask yourself,
"what is the goal here"? If your goal is to get JK fired, it is NOT going to
happen. Americans give second chances and they will with JK. Now, if he
slips up and does something like this again, then YES definitely demand his
firing.
I'm not saying I'm not outraged by this incident, but we need to look at the
bigger picture and what we really want to accomplish. I feel that continued
protests aimed at JK will soon backfire on our cause as it will make our
group look like irrational bullies who only want revenge. I personally do
not want revenge. I want for the American media and American public to view
Asian Americans as Americans, not a minority group that can be ridiculed
with racist comments.
I love the energy and enthusiasm of this group and I hope that energy can
now be redirected to address racism against Asian Americans in the media
because as we all know, this wasn't just an isolated incident. It happens
time and again in the US media and usually Asian Americans do not voice
their discontent. There is a bigger picture here and I feel that the outrage
and focus on JK only is making us lose sight of that. JK has apologized,
ABC has issued an apology.... If we keep pursuing them, we create sympathy
for JK by the American public and that's the last thing I want to see happen
