"Right now, the entire LDP does what Mr. Abe wants to do," says Tomoaki Iwai
, a political-science professor at Nihon University. "Policies are adopted
smoothly, as very few people talk back to Mr. Abe."
One newcomer is Takaya Muto. The 34-year-old entered politics after giving
up an academic career. Calling himself "among the most hawkish" in
parliament, Mr. Muto says he thinks Japan should be fully capable of
defending itself against China and North Korea, without relying on the U.S.
"The era when the U.S. was a superpower has ended," he says. "We need to be
able to protect ourselves."
Asked how Japan would do that, Mr. Muto gives an answer that remains highly
unconventional even among nationalist politicians: "NUCLEAR armament."
