Communist China has jailed nine Tibean singers after they performed songs
celebrating Tibet and opposing Chinas illegal occupation in the 1950s. They
have replaced the Tibetian farmers with Han Chinese.
The recent tragic self immolations by Tibetian monks harkens back to Vietnam
, when Vietnamese monks did the same in a proxy war with China supplying
North Vietnam.
We have made China rich by buying their goods. The recent military
incursions into the South China Sea are reminiscent of Japan, just before
Pearl Harbor.
Louisiana’s trade with China is substantial. While we enrich them, make no
mistake — the repression of Christians, Buddhists and Muslims is ongoing
under totalitarian rule.
The placing of party-approved Catholic bishops not approved by the Vatican
occurs. Outside Lhasa, Tibet, there are Chinese prison gulags, yet we
promote trade! The recent arrest of the famous Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and
of a blind activist and the kidnapping of a child lama, the Palchen Lama,
second only to the Dalai Lama. They are are hyper-sensitive to any criticism
to their territorial claims on the Philippine Islands and Taiwan. Louisiana
should continue to trade, but our U.S. representative must press them on
these issues. They routinely vote against us in the U.N. Security Council.
They are in direct competion for oil and rare earth for electric batteries,
so their middle class can grow, polluting their own cities — they are 1.6
billion Chinese. The billions in trade comes at the cost of civilized
behavior.
