defeated the incumbent and is poised to make history if she wins in the
general election.
Saira Blair of Martinsburg, W.V., defeated state Del. Larry Kump in the GOP
primary by an 872-728 margin, according to HeraldMailMedia.com. She’ll turn
18 in July, allowing her to vote in in the November general election, where
she will face Democrat Layne Diehl.
If she wins, Blair will be the youngest delegate to hold a seat in West
Virginia’s history.
Appearing on Fox and Friends Monday, the teen explained how she hand-wrote
over 800 letters to voters which she said helped fuel her win.
Blair plans to attend West Virginia University in the fall, and said that
her age shouldn’t be an issue.
“The average age in the U.S. Congress is 57, and in the average age in the
U.S. Senate it is 62,” she said. “But with all that experience, all we’ve
gotten is lower jobs, more debt and less opportunity. I don’t think a
fresh perspective will hurt anyone.”
