The Western World attributes - and celebrates - the plethora of new thought,
art, science. inventions, and more wondrous feats as "originating" in Italy
's Renaissance; but - - hold it!
After reading "1434 (P.S.)," no more belief in spontaneous combustion of
intellectual, artistic, and scientific pursuits of 15th Century Italy is
possible. The author meticulously unravels this myth and shows the genesis
of the Renaissance leading back to a thousand years of thought and a body of
knowledge coming out of China. The book leaves me with the deep regret that
I will never be able to read what an educated person in China has access to
. It piqued my curiousity to the highest. And I am wondering how many people
of Asian descent living in the Western world really know about all this??
The author's careful work relates an event that gives us a hint why at a
certain time China "pulled back" from the Western World. Was it really out
of mistrust of the West or dictated by another force? This book is a delight
for those who have questions about "where did it all start?" It is clearly
written and a pleasure to delve into. My next book will be "1421" by the
same author. Curious.... |
