suspected of attacking French magazine Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday, police
had an unlikely ally: a person hiding inside the building sending text
messages.
His intelligence input gave police a critical edge in timing the assault,
according to a police officer.
The situation unfolded at a printing facility north of Paris, where Said and
Chérif Kouachi holed up around 9:30 a.m. local time on Friday after
clashing with police nearby. Police surrounded the white, boxy, two-story
building of Création Tendance Découverte, a printer of outdoor
advertisements. Initially the business manager and his son were trapped
inside.
Around 2:30 p.m., the father managed to escape and ran to police, according
to a neighbor and the police officer.
The son remained stuck inside but the gunmen were unaware of his presence.
For almost three hours, the son communicated with police, according to the
officer.
Police raided the building around 5 p.m. local time, killing the Kouachi
brothers. They simultaneously raided a kosher grocery store in Paris where
another gunman—who said he was acting in support of the Kouachi brothers—
had taken hostages.
The son emerged unharmed after the raid, according to several police sources
. At the kosher grocery, the gunman was killed in the raid; four hostages
