Two Chinese professors have been charged with economic espionage and theft
of trade secrets from the United States.
Hao Zhang, 36, and Wei Pang, 35, were accused of being part of a "long-
running effort" to obtain technology secrets which could have military
applications and benefit the Chinese government.
Mr Hao, 36, was arrested at an airport as he arrived in the US from China
earlier this month to speak at a conference,

Mr Hao and Mr Wei studied for engineering degrees at the University of
Southern California and went on earn doctorates in 2005, before securing
jobs with technology companies in the US.
They had been researching thin-film bulk acoustic resonator, or FBAR,
technology which helps to filter communications on mobile phones and other
devices and make them more secure.
The technology can be used by in military communications and research was
funded by the US defence department.
Until 2009 Mr Hao worked as an FBAR engineer at Skyworks Solutions in
Massachusetts, Pang for Avago Technologies in Colorado.
They then resigned their posts and took up jobs at Tianjin University in
China where an FBAR facility was set up, it was alleged.
