States is responsible for a good deal of the political turmoil in the
contemporary Middle East. It championed the creation of Israel which led to
the expulsion of thousands of Palestinians from their homeland. It has
supported repressive monarchies in the Gulf, which has impeded any movements
toward democracy in the Arab peninsula. Its invasion of Iraq tore that
country apart, generating horrific terrorist violence, and its continual
bombing of political opponents in Syria and Iraq has only led to more hatred
and violence. More than any country in the world, the United States should
admit its massive responsibility for the chaos in the Middle East and accept
its share of refugees. |
