XI'S INNER CIRCLES SHOW COLD SHOULDER TO THE WEST” |

When I visited China in 2006, I was astounded to discover the neighborhood
around the Communist Party birthplace in Shanghai had upscale shops and
restaurants, complete with a Starbuck's.
Later that day I joined my partner for dinner with a professor from Fudan
University (and a party member, I must add) who couldn't stop boasting about
how western China was becoming, even citing the arrival of Starbuck's as a
great step forward in joining the wider modern world. I had hoped he would
take us to a traditional Chinese restaurant but no. He took us to a noisy
German-style brewhaus in that same neighborhood I had earlier explored. It
had communal benches and tables in the style of a medieval one I'd visited
in Germany. He then loudly declared his love of heffeweissen and proceeded
to drink us under the table while a Philippino girl-band belted out covers
of 80s British and American pop. It was truly the most surreal experience in
my life and among my favorite memories.
But more importantly, it was a startling and reassuring awakening for me;
the Chinese people aren't that different from us. They want what we have and
to be free to enjoy life to its fullest. And they desperately want to join
the Western world. They (and we) have a long, difficult, and complex road to
that end but their dreams and our ability to show them the way will long
outlast this current government.
To the fear/warmongers among us, get a passport and start visiting these
places and people you so fear. |
