A man who was ‘wrongly’ jailed following the murder of a Greater
Manchester tourist in the US is to have his case reviewed after more than
two decades behind bars.
Robert Jones was convicted of the murder of Middleton holidaymaker Julie
Stott, who was shot during a botched robbery while walking in New Orleans’
French Quarter with fiancé Peter Ellis in 1992. He was also convicted of a
spree of crimes in the city around the same time, including rape and robbery.
Lester Jones was later jailed for Miss Stott’s murder and linked to the
other crimes but Robert Jones, now 42, remains behind bars.
The Innocence Project New Orleans, now representing Robert Jones, say that
despite him being cleared by police of Miss Stott’s killing, his
convictions for rape and robbery need to be reviewed.
The judge in his trial and detectives who investigated the case insist he
had no links to Miss Stott’s murder.
Defence lawyers say victims of the other crimes for which Robert Jones was
convicted picked him out of a line-up only after his name and image were
publicised across the globe in connection with Miss Stott’s killing.
His attorneys also argue prosecutors never told the jury police had cleared
him of several of the charges - including murder - while he was on trial.
This summer, the Louisiana Supreme Court acknowledged that Robert Jones did
not get a fair trial and ruled that his case should be reopened.

New Orleans District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro is reviewing the evidence
after admitting mistakes were made ahead of a retrial.
Questions have been raised about evidence being withheld, with some
highlighting the case as just one example of the systemic failures in the
New Orleans justice system.
Jones recently spoke of his horror after being convicted of Miss Stott’s
murder and the series of other crimes when he was just 19.
“They were crushing moments,” he told the BBC.
“It felt like I had died. It was a moment of total despair for me.”
Emily Maw, director of Innocence Project New Orleans, said: “We will fight
until he gets a fair trial where a jury can hear all of the evidence about
who was guilty of the April 1992 crime spree that included the rape he was
convicted of.
“Given the facts, we believe the only just resolution is dismissal of this
case.” |
