Wading deeper into the fray on college campuses over institutional racism,
Mayor Bill de Blasio said he “absolutely” believes Yale University should
change the name of Calhoun College, the building on its campus where his son
Dante lives, because it is named after a “segregationist leader.”
De Blasio, who is white and whose wife is black, has often spoken of the
challenges his children Chiara and Dante face as mixed-race children, most
notably saying he had spoken with Dante about the dangers he might face in
police encounters.
De Blasio said earlier this month that he believed the wave of protests on
college campuses, from the University of Missouri to Yale and beyond, were
“a moment of truth” in the nation's struggle with its history of racism.
On Monday, he went into further detail, telling reporters at an unrelated
press conference that Dante, a freshman at Yale, has been active in student
protests at his school.
“He has certainly been involved on the discussion on the campus,” the
mayor said. “He’s active in the black student union, and he’s been to
some of the protests,” he said, adding that while he didn’t want to speak
for his son, he believes Dante is “very concerned” about the situation at
Yale.
De Blasio said both he and his son believe the name of the building where
Dante lives should be changed, too, because it is named after John C.
Calhoun, the wild-haired 19th-century South Carolinian statesman and senator
who served as vice president under both John Quincy Adams and Andrew
Jackson and is well-known for his defense of the institution of slavery and
of states’ rights.
“And, you know, he certainly notes the fact that the college he’s in,
Calhoun College, is named for someone it shouldn’t be named for,” de
Blasio said. “That’s quite evident to him, and you can understand as a
young man of African descent that it doesn't feel particularly appropriate
to live in a place named after the chief segregationist leader of the South
in that period of time.”
The mayor’s comments come as administrators at Princeton University agreed
to consider removing the name of former president Woodrow Wilson from the
university’s School of Public and International Affairs over his racist
views. | s*******1 发帖数: 16479 | |
