describes the physical presence of a building(s) or other structure. The
term brick-and-mortar business is often used to refer to a company that
possesses buildings, production facilities, or store for operations.[1] The
name is a metonym derived from the traditional building materials associated
with physical buildings: bricks and mortar. The term was originally used by
Charles Dickens in the book Little Dorrit.[2]
More specifically, in the jargon of e-commerce businesses, brick-and-mortar
businesses are companies that have a physical presence and offer face-to-
face customer experiences. This term is usually used to contrast with a
transitory business or an internet-only presence, such as an online shop,
which have no physical presence for shoppers to visit and buy from directly,
though such online businesses normally have non-public physical facilities
from which they either run business operations, and/or warehousing for mass
physical product storage and distribution.[3] Concerns such as foot traffic,
storefront visibility, and appealing interior design apply mainly to brick-
and-mortar businesses rather than online ones.
The divergence between brick-and-mortar businesses and online businesses has
expanded in the 21st Century as more and more entrepreneurs and established
organizations create profitable products known as web and mobile apps. Many
web and mobile apps are digitally distributed and offer value without
delivering a physical product or direct service, thereby eliminating the
need for manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution. Furthermore, the
advent of reliable, affordable remote business collaboration tools
diminishes the need for physical business operations infrastructure for many
web and mobile product businesses.
The term brick-and-mortar businesses is also a retronym in that most stores
had a physical presence before the advent of the Internet. However, the term
is also applicable when contrasting businesses with physical presence and
those that operated strictly in an order-by-mail capacity pre-Internet. Some
stores such as Best Buy, Walmart, and Target are primarily known as brick-
and-mortar businesses but also have online shopping sites.

等等传统商家都有网络销售部门，或者是自己的网络销售，或者依靠其他网购网站，买
够一定数量的东西都免运费。比如沃尔玛买50刀东西免邮费邮寄到家。你光看Brick

发帖数: 902 | 7 USPS 有一段时间都快倒闭了，大家都发 email了, 没多少人写信了。过几年又活过来
了，活得还挺滋润，都是拜网购所赐。除了买衣服要现场试试合不合身，买蔬菜水果要
挑一挑。其他买电器，书本，礼品都可以网上买。鼠标点两下，看 review，比较价格
都很方便，还省了开车废油费时间了。前几年马棕都要超过沃尔玛了，现在沃尔玛也搞
网络销售了，估计能赶回来点 |

Big online promotions and pre-holiday sales have lured in shoppers, some of
whom are becoming leery about the big crowds and in-store pandemonium that
often punctuates Black Friday. Anecdotal evidence suggests that consumers
shifted their purchases from physical stores to websites.
"This year, we saw Black Friday ads emerge before Halloween, as retailers
aimed to get at the shopper's wallet early," said Kevin Kearns, ShopperTrak
chief revenue officer. "And from our data, we saw greater retail sales
generated prior to the Black Friday weekend, which is a result of retailers
successfully elongating the holiday season."
