Federal immigration authorities and the Mexican Consulate
in Detroit are helping with the investigation into the
deaths of five Mexican immigrants in a house fire in Novi.
Novi Police Chief David Molloy said in a written statement
that the immigrants all worked at Kim's Garden, a Chinese
restaurant near the home in Novi. Molloy said they're
looking into whether the immigrants were living in the U.S.
legally.
A message left at Kim's Garden was not returned Monday
afternoon.
Juan Manuel Solana Morales, the Consul of Mexico in Detroit,
said his office is trying to help identify the victims and
get in touch with family. He said the office is working with
police and federal immigration authorities.
"We're going to help the families as much as we can,"
he told the Free Press.
The victims are in their late 20s or early 30s, said Novi
Police. The Oakland County Medical Examiner's office
conducted autopsies on Monday.
The fire started at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday on Mystic Forest,
west of Novi Road, south of 10 Mile Road.
Kurt Kilar, a neighbor, said he stepped outside at 9:30 a.m.
Sunday to see that home’s garage fuming smoke, but he didn't
see any flames.
A fire truck soon arrived and rescuers wheeled out a young
man on a stretcher and administered CPR. Kilar said he
recognized the man from seeing him walk in the neighborhood. |
