I’m not truly qualified or experienced in the aerospace industry, so my
answer is based more on technical specs and anecdotal reports from users (
pilots, technicians). Some amount disparity also remains in application :
fighter/military engines vs commercial.
My verdict? GE.
Rolls Royce alone is nowhere near its former glory, the aero engine industry
has thinned out and now most of the small players have gone bust or merged.
RR is now more often a partner than sole contractor in engine contracts.
Mainly because engine development is extremely expensive.
P&W is the largest manufacturer and has been the primary supplier to the US
military. P&W also acquired an early mover advantage, both in commercial
aviation and military, powering the people mover Boeings and weapons
carrying most of the fighters, bombers and transport/support aircraft. GE
was a late entrant, but it’s had (arguably) more innovative designs and
higher performance and reliability overall ; not that there weren’t any
problems - the early F-404 engines were infamous for engine fires.
While there’s no truly large gap in P&W vs GE engines, but P&W has had
notable engine problems with new engine designs, that get corrected over
time. The P&W F-100-PW-200 engines for example, had a reputation for
afterburner problems and reliability was lower than forecast. This prompted
the USAF to seek an alternative engine, which was fulfilled by the GE F-110,
itself based on a rejected prototype (the rejection doesn’t necessarily
mean poor design or performance, some projects get cancelled or rejected for
costs , and the technology being developed is too different and thus high-
risk). While this alternative engine was never used on USAF F-15s, the F-16s
soon got GE more often than P&W powerplants (although part of the reasoning
was since F-15s retained the P&W, more F-16s had to use GE motors to be
commercially viable to GE , since the USAF wanted to keep the competition
alive that would force P&W to deliver. F-15 export customers mostly chose
the P&W because the USAF retained the F-15 on P&W only, helping lower the
cost of maintenance/spares, except for South Korea which selected F-110s for
its F-15K order.)
The subsequent -220 and -229 engines were miles better on all counts, but F-
16 pilots prefer the GE F-110 engine over the P&W - especially the F-110-GE-
129 and F-110-GE-132 variants. The GE engines provide more thrust at take
off and is more efficient, whereas the P&W with a lower bypass ratio retains
better performance at high altitude, high speed regime. Most pilots
appreciate the extra thrust at the take-off climb phase that GE engines
provide, and most of the F-16 exports are with GE engines and the slight
trade off in high altitude performance is worth those gains. The F-110 also
was selected to power the F-14, which for long had been neglected in terms
of using an appropriate powerplant to replace the underpowered P&W TF-30. |
