A senior Trump administration delegation is heading to China next week to
discuss a possible deal to avert a trade war, but Beijing still refuses to
address the real problems in the U.S.-China economic relationship. The
Chinese plan is to offer the Americans flimsy, short-term concessions that
will tempt President Trump to declare victory before the fight begins. He
must not fall into the trap.

So far at least, support from our fellow developed economy allies has been
tepid. Each of these countries must hold their respective corporate leaders'
feet to the fire and ask them just what kind of "corporate citizens" they
are.
Naturally, the groundwork for this should have been laid long before the
first trade war salvos but this is Trump we're talking about.

Results from our fellow developed economy allies have been tepid because
they are members of TPP. We figured we were too good to join. So we're on
our own.

Given what we know about Trump's business and personal failings, we must ask
if Trump is even capable of making a good deal. God help us.

All we can be sure of is that Trump will act in what he considers to be his
personal interests. Is there anyone naive enough to think that the Chinese
aren't aware of that fact?

I don’t doubt for a moment that China will attempt to screw us over (again)
. But, love him or hate him, Trump is the President we need right now to
deal with this particular problem. He will not be so easily fooled as many
of his predecessors.

The major complaint I hear from China is that the Trumpists are unable to
articulate what they want. They need specific requests.
I think what the Trumpists want is for China to do what the United States is
trying to do - roll back the economy to 1955. Ain't gonna happen.

The Chinese negotiators are about twice as smart as the morons the U.S. is
sending to China. The U.S. will be lucky to negotiate a deal half as good as
the one they currently have. Rump would trade the entire world for two
scoops or really good ice cream.
Rump is a moron of monumental proportions. It is amazing that he can put his

"None of that addresses the larger issues ... forced technology transfer,
intellectual property theft and attempts to unfairly dominate future
technology sectors through state-supported “ national champion ”
corporations."
How much technology transfer occurred when US companies decided to move
manufacturing to China for its low wages? Were all of those "brilliant" CEOs
(who were well rewarded for cutting costs) so stupid that they could not
understand that Chinese scientists and engineers were more than capable of
figuring out the "trade secrets" of what they build for us? Then there are
the companies once thought to be important for defense that were allowed to
be bought and then moved to China in the early to mid 2000's.
As for "state-supported “national champion” corporations", I'm not sure
how much those differ from our DARPA, the work done at NIST, and other
National Lab (DOE), and government sponsored basic research. However, I
might be mistaking your description as being the equivalent. Of course, with
the current leadership in Congress and the Administration (let alone the
newest Republican Study Group screed), the US should not do such things as
that amounts to the "government picking winners" among technologies.

There is no "forced" technology transfer. Yes, many American companies have
entered joint ventures where their capital contribution was the transfer of
technology. But they entered those deals because they wanted to. Yes, it was
necessary in order to enter the China market.
The problem here is that Chinese industrial policy is to do the same thing
that Korea and Japan did decades ago - move up the value chain. The US is
not going to be able to stop that short of a world war. The only sane
response is for the US to move up the value chain itself - innovate faster
and better than the Chinese - but that is hard work, and requires science
and education, something an anathema to Trumpists.

"China is trying to lure Trump into a bad deal on trade"
Of course they are... They sense weakness. They'll feed his narcissistic
bottomless pit neediness for praise and as long as he can declare a "win" on
Fox and Friends, he'll sign something stupid. The Senate won't ratify it
though, and he'll look look stupid as the details emerge.

You are the first I have seen bring up the ratification by congress. Just
why is it suddenly going to be different now than when Obama brought home
the Iran deal. Or the Nafta deal or the upcoming Korea deal. This is all
going nowhere too fast!

Obama used sanctions authority to broker the Iran deal. The Republicans didn
't like it, but it gave him an opening. NAFTA was ratified by the Senate,
and it requires 2/3 of the Senate.

Again this unbelievable arrogance on the side of the US, believing they can
change the game simply by imposing tariffs.
China has a long term plan, and the USA only have ... Trump.
This fight is already lost as it is just based on such a simplistic, one-

Yes, having refused to join the TPP, Trump gave up a critical 'bargaining
chip' over China. The TPP was set up to create an economic trade pact that
could provide some protection against Chinese exports. Pulling out was the
stupidest thing possible. The Chinese government must have celebrated that
night after it happened!

Why we are doing business with a Communist country in the first place. Are
Americans crazy about the junks manufactured in Communist China? I grew up
during the cold war era and I was told not to deal with any Communist
countries including Soviet Union, East European countries and Communist
China under Mao Tse-tung. I tried to buy things made in America as much as
possible.

It is because of the greediness of companies like Apple and the likes that
use China as a cheap work bench. The times when China was only producing
cheap junk are long over.

Apple is no different from any multinational corporation. The percent of the
Apple phone that is actually related to China is relatively little. Many of
the parts come from other countries. It is true they are assembled in China
but that is a small part of the actual cost of an Iphone. China still
produces a lot of cheap junk. Some of their products are fine. If China
follows the industrialization path that Japan followed, their quality will
improve. It use to be a rap to say 'made in Japan' but not anymore. Japan
has a better reputation for quality than a lot of U.S. made products.
Germany has a better reputation for quality than the U.S. China seems to be
improving more slowly than Japan. I think a communist, autocratic government
has a basic problem with trust. The foundation for quality is trust and
reputation. It is difficult to obtain but easier to lose. The Republicans
have a problem with reputation and trust and rightly so. Republicans being
responsible for setting the U.S. reputation for trust means we are in bad
shape with regard to the reputation of U.S. products and reliability.

The U.S. is capricious under Trump.....the Chinese have solid plans, long
term goals, and know how to reach them. We have a "leader" who flips and
flops like a fish on the boat deck. The Chinese have the upper hand and they
know it, unfortunately. Buttering up Trump is all they need to do; let him
think he won so he can "save face," while continuing to steal our
intellectual property. We're sunk with this administration at the helm.

Ban imports from Chinese state owned enterprises. They are communist
companies, propping up a communist government.
Americans who do business with these SOEs are no better than the father of
the Koch brothers....who worked on Stalins oil fields helping the Soviet
government get wealthier or those who traded with the Nazis.
