China’s Anniversary Whitewashes the Terror of Mao
https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/chinas-anniversary-
whitewashes-the-bloody-terror-of-mao/
"he decided to intervene in the Korean War"
You left out that there was an American army marching to China's border. But
I suppose the Chinese should have trusted to the intentions of America's
leaders.
"Shortly after the PRC’s founding, he initiated a campaign against 'counter
-revolutionaries' and other opponents, especially officials in the previous
Nationalist government."
I'm curious, what happened to America's counter-revolutionaries? You know,
those colonists who had supported Great Britain. Were they just allowed to
settle back down in their homes with all of their property after the
American Revolution was won by their opponents?
I know this is a conservative publication and website and Mr. Bandow works
for a libertarian think tank and was a member of a conservative presidential
administration, but did nothing good really happen between the founding of
the PRC and the great famine of 1959-61? No economic stabilization or
progress at all after a century of humiliation and exploitation at the hands
of foreign imperialists? No improvement in living standards or life
expectancy? And after the failure of the Great Leap Forward - Mao's attempt
at decentralization, by the way - and before the Cultural Revolution started
, again, was there was no progress at all, no return to "normality" and
stabilization of living standards?

I just got back a week ago from a tour that started in Chengdu and then
spent many days in Tibet. It was eye opening.
I did not see one Chinese flag in Chengdu, but flags and propaganda
billboards were everywhere in Tibet. Lhasa has been subsumed by a modern
Chinese city. There are hundreds of apartment blocks existent and under
construction. The infrastructure is impressive. Expressways and paved roads,
I had LTE in the remotest of places, the high speed rail line to Lhasa is
well on its way to completion. I get the overall feeling that Chine is
investing in China, and is looking ahead even as we here are too blinded by
hating on each other and being divided, and allowing our wealth to be
drained away into the upper classes.
The censorship there was apparent. I had to avoid "China" and "Tibet" on
search terms or the server would shut down. No way could BBC be accessed
online. Our group had to show passports for hotels, national parks, and many
checkpoints out on rural highways, as well as just to walk around a heavily
Tibetan area near the Jokhang monastery, where there were two sets of four
armed military men on the plaza and many police checkpoints with package
scanners for the pedestrians walking the narrow streets. Those pacifist
Buddhist herdsmen and farmers sure seem to scare the crap out of the Chinese
. It is baffling.
How to deal with China? Hot military action is too dangerous, and that
leaves soft power. If we believe that our system is better, we damn well
better start finding some consensus points and start functioning like an
effective nation and society again, or we will not be able to counterbalance
China. United we stand, divided we are falling. We need so show the world
an alternative example to the police state model.
