A US Navy P-8A Poseidon was hit by a weapons-grade laser during a routine
patrol above international waters on February 17, 2020. The incident
happened in the Philippine Sea approximately 380 miles west of Guam, where
it was targeted by the laser belonging to a People's Liberation Army Navy's
destroyer with hull number 161, according to the official statement, which
should be the Type 052D Destroyer "Hohhot."

问：据美国媒体报道，一艘中国海军驱逐舰此前在菲律宾海上，向美国的一架P-8A侦察
机发射激光，发言人能否证实此事？国防部对此有何评论？
答：美国媒体的报道与事实不符。2月17日，中国海军编队位公海组织例行演练。期间
，美军一架P-8A型反潜巡逻机不顾中方多次警告，抵近中方舰艇编队实施长时间、低高
度绕飞侦察。在与美机相遇的全过程中，中方舰艇的操作是安全、规范、专业的，符合
有关国际法和国际实践。相反，美机行为在意图上是不友好的，在操作上是不专业的，
对双方舰机及人员安全造成严重威胁。中方对此坚决反对，并向美方提出严正交涉。
我们要求美方立即停止类似挑衅性危险行动，停止对中方无端指责抹黑，以免损害中美
两国两军关系大局。 |

The laser was not visible to the naked eye and was detected by the Poseidon'
s sensors. The P-8A, assigned to Patrol Squadron (VP) 45 and based at NAS
Jacksonville (Florida), is currently deployed in the US 7th Fleet area of
operations and operates from Kadena Air Base (Japan). No damage or injuries
to the Poseidon and its crew were reported.
