Death Toll Reaches 66 in Japan Floods, Landslides (PHOTOS)
More than a week of devastating floods and landslides have killed at least
66 people in Japan, while 16 remained missing on Friday.
Tens of thousands of responders continue to dig through mud and debris in
the hardest-hit areas along the Kuma River in Japan’s southwestern-most
island of Kyushu. The Japan Meteorological Agency ordered over 200,000
residents to evacuate from Kumamoto and Kagoshima prefectures, according to
Kyodo News.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pressured the government to declare an “
extreme disaster” to aid rescue efforts, the Washington Post reported.
By Wednesday, rain had weakened the ground and caused 59 rivers, including
the Kuma in Kumamoto Prefecture, to overflow, and caused at least 123
mudslides in 18 prefectures. An estimated 6,000 homes have been damaged and
the floods and mudslides continued to cut off around 70 locations and 2,000
people, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said.

Among the fatalities were 14 residents of a nursing home near the Kuma River
when the building filled with water after an embankment collapsed,
according to the New York Times.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the rain isn't over yet. The
