Box Office: ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’ Tops ‘Captain Marvel’ In China
Godzilla Vs. Kong is the first-non MCU/non-Fast & Furious Hollywood flick to
top $150 million in China in over two years.
For those still keeping track, Godzilla Vs. Kong earned another $2.7 million
in China on its third Friday of release. That’s a drop of 67% from last
Friday’s gross, which is somewhat normal for a big Hollywood movie in China
. Yes, it has been behind the local melodrama My Sister (about a young woman
forced to care for her younger brother after their parents die) since last
weekend, but money is money and both films are winners in China.
My Sister, which deals with China’s controversial one-child policy, has
earned $30.6 million in eight days. Meanwhile, Godzilla Vs. Kong has now
passed $155.5 million in China alone. That puts the Adam Wingard-directed
MonsterVerse flick just above Captain Marvel ($154 million in 2019) and The
Meg ($153 million in 2018). That puts it, differences in local currency
versus exchange rates notwithstanding, among the top 30 non-Chinese grossers
ever in China. It’s also already 15% above Godzilla: King of the Monsters
($135 million in 2019) and should match or exceed Kong: Skull Island ($168
million in 2017) by the end of its run.
Among Hollywood biggies, it has earned more money than any movie in China
since Hobbs & Shaw and Spider-Man: Far from Home, both of which earned $200
million in the summer of 2019. It’s the first-non MCU/non-Fast & Furious
Hollywood flick to top $150 million in China since Bumblebee ($171 million)
in late 2018. The film should end the weekend with over/under $162 million,
with a likely final total of over/under $180 million barring any shifts in
either direction. That would put it alongside Mission: Impossible – Fallout
($181 million) and Captain America: Civil War ($180 million) among recent
Hollywood blockbusters.
Again, what this shows is that, even in a marketplace where local
blockbusters (both action fantasies and character dramas) are smashing
records while Hollywood flicks struggle, there are some franchises that
still pull their weight in China. And yes, the MonsterVerse seems to be one
of them (alongside the MCU, the Fast Saga, Jurassic, the “Spider-Verse,”
presumably Mission: Impossible and arguably Avatar), which bodes well for a
theoretical sequel of follow-up should all invested parties see eye to eye.
I don’t have updated overseas or North American grosses for the film, but I
’d presume that it’s over the $58 million domestic cume for Tenet to
become the biggest domestic grosser since Onward ($61.55 million) last March
. Once it passes $70.5 million, it’ll top The Invisible Man to be the
biggest domestic earner since Sonic the Hedgehog ($146 million) in February
of last year.
Presuming it doesn’t flatline this weekend, it should pass Birds of Prey ($
84 million) and take its place as the third-biggest domestic grosser (behind
Sonic and Bad Boys for Life’s $204 million finish) of 2020 and 2021
combined. This is all on a Covid-curve, but it’s still a relative win.
