At the NGA, Daniel sat at a desk among many other desks in a forgotten
corner of a long cubicle farm on the sixth floor of a giant eye and entered
location data for geographic points in China on U.S.-government maps. He was
finally using his Chinese. It was dull make-work, a lot of “boring days
and stupid meetings.” He could plot 1,000 points a day, and he did so for
days on end, though, he says, all the same information was available on
