Yes, the CCP was/is rife with corruption. But isn't it a step in the right
direction to expose some of it? Is it necessary for offenders to be shown in
chains for it to be meaningful? The point is to shine a light on what has
been happening and how outrageous it was, in order to decrease this sort of
thing moving forward. I, for one, would love to see a reality TV show
featuring some of the corruption here at home. Perhaps the Former Guy could
host.

@Pigsy You don't need to understand Chinese to watch the series. If you do,
you will see that this "review" doesn't really accurately characterize how
the offenders are portrayed. They are not in chains, but they are clearly
being interviewed in prison and wearing prison garb. The lighting and
background music very effectively convey the idea that the se are bad people.
A similar series would be very difficult to produce in the US because very
few people guilty of this sort of corruption in the US do serious prison
time. There are many ways that the problem of corruption in China is more
serious than in the US and that functioning formal mechanisms for
controlling it that are well established in the West remain to be put into
place in China. But the trajectories of the two countries are in the
opposite directions. This TV series is part of a massive anti-corruption
campaign in China that is inconceivable in the US. |

In the eyes of much of the West it seems that Xi's great sin is that he
recognized that the Deng era of great growth was accompanied by greater
corruption within the CCP. He seems to have grasped that at some point an
economically corrupt CCP would inevitably lead to the same disparities in
wealth and opportunity that has characterized Western liberal economies in
the age of globalization.
These disparities and inequities in the West are much of the reason for the
explosion of populist discontent (Tea Party, Brexit, gillet jaunes,
Trumpism) that is threatening the capitalist/liberal/democratic order. From
these developments Xi seems to have concluded that the Red anti-corruption
reformist instincts that he had when he rose to power are correct.
Deng era unrestrained growth coupled with official corruption threatens to
leave hundreds of millions of Chinese behind -- and given the Western
patterns of recent years, the subsequent discontent could threaten stability
in China just as it is doing in the West. This seems to be Xi's worry and
in Western eyes, his attempts to fight it is his sin.
His policy seems to put overall social stability above brute economic growth
. His policies may hinder or delay China's overtaking the US economically
but he thinks that an acceptable price to pay for stability and a more even
development among all segments of the population. To put such concerns over
growth is heresy to Western sensibilities. People over Profit - he must not
succeed. |

I wondered what today's article demonizing China would be. Here we have it.
This is getting really worrisome. Over the past few years, the efforts of
the NYT and other Western media outlets to demonize everything China does
seems part of a concerted propaganda campaign. A few months back, there was
an article on how people in China were confronting Western reporters for
focusing on the negatives in the country's response to recent flooding. It
is not hard to understand their frustration.
A truly objective evaluation of China would examine the many amazing
accomplishments of that country over an incredibly brief period of time, as
well as the real costs of such enormous economic and technological
achievement. The government of China has been very effective at raising the
standard of living and the possibilities of a good life for hundreds of
millions of people. At the same time, it is not averse to using force to
achieve many of its goals.
But a truly honest comparison would note the many ways in which Western
states - especially the US - resort to violence and breaches of
international law in their foreign policies. Such a comparison would also
note the many ways in which the US is a corrupt and failing democracy. I don
't expect any such balanced reporting from the NYT, but I am disheartened by
what I see as clear efforts to create a new Cold War by obfuscating and
misrepresenting the other side. |
