I'd say it's pretty sever now. Most likely local area will be greatly
affected, while large area spreading around the world like Chernobyl
probably won't happen. They have pressure vessle and containment (even crack
may happen it's still in better situation), and there's no big fire pumping
radioactive stuff into the sky. |

fuel pool submerged by water and continuously cool the water.
if the pool loses outer cooling source it will boil and fuel will eventually
overheat and cladding material can't hold the fuel and all highly
radiactive fission product inside it. or, if simply the pool leaks, same
thing will happen.
that's why they now use helicopter to pour water into the spent fuel pool

但是衰变热量还是很多的，要继续冷却一个月以上。冷却下来的乏燃料棒可以
从反应堆中取出，但是仍然要放到废燃料池中泡在水里散热，虽然这时的热量不多，
水池的自然散热就够了，但是衰变放出的热量如果没有散热的话仍然能够把
燃料棒本身熔化，因为燃料棒本身的体积很小，相对于那些衰变热来说其热容量
太小了，积累的热量足以把自身熔化。
乏燃料通常在水池里泡几年才会最终处理，水池里可以看到衰变过程发射出的
超过光速的带电粒子在水里激发形成的蓝色的切伦科夫辐射光。有人来挑刺
那些粒子的速度不可能超过光速吗？呵呵
